SHG? Clomid? Newbie

Hi. Newbie here!! This is my first time on here and posting. My husband and I have been TTC for a year now. I have a very regular period every 32-34 days and my OPK sticks say I ovulate every month around day 18 or 19. With that being said we are STILL not preggo. :(
My hubby had a semen analysis done and that checked out great. I am scheduled for an SHG and was wondering if it's going to hurt? What can I expect? She said if my tubes aren't block they will start me on clomid.. Isn't clomid to help you ovulate??? The ovulation sticks I take at home say I ovulate every cycle. What else could be wrong???? I'm very nervous about the SHG. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!!!!!

Welcome and sorry you've found yourself here!  Are you working with an OB or an RE?  Also, did you doctor say HSG or SHG?

    Hi there!

If you're having a Saline Sonogram ( I think this is what you're having) then breathe, it's not bad.  :)  I had one last month two days after an HSG.  For my saline sonogram it started like a pap smear.  My doctor used a tiny catheter and inserted saline into my uterus.  I did not take any medicine before hand (ibuprofen, tylenol) and I did fine.  It's not comfortable, but it's not horrible.  If you experience menstrual cramps then you should be ok.  The ache is comparable to the cramps you might have while on your period.

Are you seeing an RE or are you seeing OB/GYN?

Many of the women here will tell you that clomid is a medicine that should be monitored properly.  And if you've been trying for a year, you should reach out to an RE.  A RE is a trained specialist and can get down to the reasons why you're not getting pregnant yet.

I was skeptical to make the jump to an RE, but I'm glad that I did.  I'm at the tail end of fertility testing with a Reproductive Endocrinologist.  I should have answers soon and I feel like I'm in the right place.  My doctor is monitoring and checking everything.  Maybe you should take a look at an RE if you haven't yet.

I hope this helps!  By the way, the women on this board are awesome and incredibly helpful.  If you have questions, ask.  Everyone here is always happy to help.

Thank you ladies!!! I had an SHG today. It wasn't too bad, but wasn't pleasant either!!. They did a cervical block and that numbed me up pretty good. I felt a lot of pressure and pinching, but that was all. The test showed my tubes were all clear. They said we should give it another 2 or 3 months of trying. It has already been a year. I am seeing my regular OBGYN.

Is an RE the same thing as a fertility doctor?? How does that work with insurance?? Thank you again for all the help!!

Can I ask a personal question?  How old are you?  I guess the rule of thumb is folks under 35 should be trying for a year without success and then move to a RE.  Folks over 35 should have tried for at least six months and move to an RE if you're not pregnant in that time period.

A RE is a fertility doctor.  Some insurance companies cover treatment, some dont.  I'd recommend looking into your insurance to see if infertility is covered.  You might be surprised at what insurance covers.  My insurance has a deductible regardless of what kind of doctor I go to ... so I've had to pay $1300 out of pocket this year.  Now that I've met the deductible, my insurance pays 50% of everything.  This may seem like a lot, but Care First has negotiated pricing.  If the doctor bills insurance $500 for a visit, my insurance comes back and says, "No, our agreed upon rate for this service is xxxx."  So I am responsible for 50% of xxx - and my responsibility of the bill has been very reasonable and manageable.

I came to the bump in November seeking advise on what I should do ... wondering what steps I should take.  The kickass women on this board convinced me to move forward and see an RE.  So I decided to call and give it a go.  I can't tell you how happy I am that I made the decisions to move to an RE.  Since December I've had all of my testing and I'm about to have a surgery and should be able to start IUI's in two weeks or so.

I am 25 and my husband is also 25. I will call my insurance companies ( I have 2 until Dec when I turned 26) and hopefully one of them has some type of coverage. Thank you for the advice. :) I will look into an RE after I talk to them.I am ready for some answers and maybe medication to help. Each month it's getting harder and harder on me. Thanks again.

I have not had any type of blood work done..... Is that normal or something they normally do first???? My husband has had a semen analysis and I have had the SHG, that is ALL.

We have been trying for over a year and will see a RE in March. My ob/gyn wanted to put me on Clomid without monitoring-thank goodness I was already stalking TTGP and 3T!!

Our insurance "will not cover anything related to infertility" but we still feel this is the right move. Too many scary clomid without monitoring stories.

    Good luck!!!
