Preemies

Constipation?

My twins, 5 1/2 months actual 4 months adjusted, started solids 4 days ago. They were diagnosed a month ago with silent reflux and are both on Previsid. It's helping the reflux but not 100% so the ped GI suggested we try solid foods before bottles 2 oz twice a day. We did butternut squash for 4 days and today are starting sweet potatoes and then in 4 more days carrots. The babies love the food! But we seem to be having some constipation which I know is normal when starting solids. They are having at least 1 constipated poop a day and then 2-3 normal poops. The GI suggested giving them both 1oz prune/pear juice mixed with 1oz of water once a day and see if that helps. Have any of you given your preemies prune or pear juice for constipation? Which was better? I'm concerned bc of the reflux. Will prune or pear juice hurt their reflux? Thanks!!!!?

Re: Constipation?

  • M had reflux and really enjoyed prune juice with some water.  What helps us with constipation is several bottles of that per day, but you don't want to do too much juice/water if your LOs are not gaining enough weight.  You might also mix more water into the purees.  I've found this helps.  You could also introduce pureed pears or plums as the next food.

  • My formerly refluxy twin got all kinds of constipated when we started solids. We backed off the purees with the exception of pears and yogurt. We also give him a mix of pear and prune juice. We still give finger foods (we do some BLW style foods as well).

We still deal with it, but the juice plus limiting purees helped a bunch. It did take a few days to see results though.

I've looked into probiotics a bit but haven't started anything yet.

  • If they are on solids, try prune puree. We used that with success. I would mix it in with another puree since the flavor is not so great.

  • We just use prune purees. Works like a charm. Our pedi said apple juice but he wouldn't drink it
