Baby constipation-Yay Poop!

edited February 2014 in October 2013 Moms
Lilli is a little constipated and I am about to take a rectal temp again. I have done one earlier today at her last wet diaper. The pedi said add a 1/2 tsp karo syrup to a bottle or a little diluted prune juice if the thermometer doesn't get a poop by this afternoon.

Is there a special technique I should be doing to get her to poop? I didn't think to ask and I already called the pedi once today. This morning I cleaned a digital thermometer, greased it up with petroleum jelly and took her temperature. Nothing different than just getting a temp, except I draped the changing area in case of explosive result.

  • I will say that my grandmother and mother swear by the Karo syrup.  When DS1 was a baby they used it on him.  I was a young mom then and tended to listen to whatever they told me.  It gets the job done, but it just seems pretty harsh for their little tummies.  LO has issues with constipation and when his tummy is hurting I give him a dose of Little Remedies Gas Drops and he goes within a half hour.  May be worth trying since the gas drops aren't as harsh as Karo.

  • Little bit of pear juice works for my LO. The rectal temp does nothing! And pear juice does not stain like prune

  • You may not be up to giving solids yet, but we were having issues and I have DS about 2 teaspoons of pears (organic step 1 baby pureed pears) - he loved it btw - but it totally cleaned out the system. I thought it was much easier on his system than the Karo syrup. We tried the rectal temp with no success.

  • I have used the Karo syrup (dark) and it worked great. Also rubbing clockwise circles on lo's belly helps to get things moving.

  • We didn't have any success with the Karo syrup, but prune juice works well for LO. We just add a little bit to a bottle. Good luck, nothing worse than an uncomfortable baby :(
  • I have tried prune and apple. Diluted, not diluted... he hates it all. LO would strain and turn red when he tried to poop, and then scream. it broke my heart. I finally gave him a tiny little glycerin suppository. It worked pretty well. And he's been somewhat okay since.

I've also been told there is prune juice extract. You just put a few drops in their milk. My friends swear by it. But I haven't been able to find it in stores yet.

If you have a CVS they sell it in the baby aisle by the infant/children's medicine.
  • We have to use glycerin suppositories every now and then, works in minutes!
  • Queen mother of poop problems here! The GI specialist instructed us to give him 2 oz a day of un diluted prune or apple juice. That worked for a while but then he started protesting it. So now we give him 6 ml of milk of magnesia spread out in bottles throughout the day and it works like a charm. It's tasteless and odorless so he doesn't know it's there. LO is also on 17 ml of stool softener a day. If all else fails, glycerin suppositories are always on hand. Good luck!
