Babies: 3 - 6 Months

back of my baby's head

Ok, im a new mom and I noticed that back of her head has a little bald spot but wat concerns me is the way that its shaped in that same area. It seems a little flat to me? Is that normal since she does sleep on her back?

Re: back of my baby's head

  • Flat heads are incredibly common now that we put babies to sleep on their backs.  How old is your LO and when is your next check up?  Most doctors check for it but if it concerns you and they don't check it, bring it up.  We had this issue and while we could have gotten a helmet, it was determined to be cosmetic only.  In some cases the flat spot causes distortion of the sides of the head or face or can even impact the brain (severe cases) and a helmet would be absolutely necessary.  Almost all babies have some degree of flatness.

If you find it's more on one side than the other, try changing the way your baby lays.  If it's say, on the left and that's the open side of your crib, put her head at the other end to encourage her to turn her head in the other direction to see out.
