Babies on the Brain

Getting Pregnant isn't Easy (I'm new here)

edited February 2014 in Babies on the Brain
Hello everyone,
I'm new here. I started on the knot then the nest and now that DH and I have baby on the brain I thought I'd join here. We got married in July and have lived together for about 5 years. We are still renting while we save for a house and try to get career related jobs for our degrees. He is a child Psychologist bound to go to grad school before he can get a good job and I am a clinical Psychologist with a focus on industrial organizational psychology who is bound to take over walmart or something. (Lol)
I was taking Depo for a few months before the wedding but stoped in September because I gained 30lbs (yeah that wasn't a happy day when I got on the scale). The doctor said it would take a few months before I leveled back out and could conceive. 5 months later and I still have no period and no baby. I'm not distraught or anything, we are OK with waiting, I just didn't know it was so hard to get pregnant! My parents used scare tactics and I was convinced for the longest time that as soon as I stop taking BC I would get pregnant. Nope, not true, it's much harder than that. I'm glad I found this forum to get some advice though!

  • I didn't think to talk to my doctor about it, I just thought it was normal. She made it sound like it would take a few months but 5 is a long time to me so I'll have to reschedule with her. Thanks for the advice!

  • Definitely go to your doctor so they can jump-start your period. I second everything else Gnome said. Plus once you do get your period, I would recommend you start temping.
  • Like everyone else said - go to the doctor.

Growing up, we are all fed the idea in sex ed that it just takes one time having sex and boom - baby. In reality it takes 1 well timed intercourse for a fertile woman and man to conceive, and even then there is a 20% chance. Some people get pregnant right away but it's starting to seem to me that the more you are ready for a baby, the longer it will take to conceive lol

Are you actively ttc right now? I would just make sure to run the numbers first and know what a baby will cost. The first time we seriously looked at it a few years ago I cried. Since then, our income grew significantly as we found good jobs after college. We bought a house and all that jazz. Now we can actually afford the $1K a month it will take for day care, the diapers and formula, the nursery stuff, the medical stuff, birthing classes and doula, the $200 a month for insurance just for the baby. It would be a better idea to buy a house (if that is a major goal for you) and lock down secure jobs before adding on to your family, but it is ultimately your decision. Good luck conceiving if you decide that now is the right time!
