Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Animal names vs. sounds

My son is 20 months old. He is good at the following sounds:

Moo
Quack
Neigh
Baa
Laughs when he sees a giraffe (because of a book)
Aaaaah (elephant sound)
Oinks like a pig
Roars for lions and tigers
Woofs like a dog

BUT

He doesn't say any of the animals names, only their sounds.
Is this a problem?

Re: Animal names vs. sounds

  • Normal. DS started out saying sounds and now at almost two he knows many animals. He still calls sheep "baa" and calls elephants "horsie" but knows how to correctly say 20+ animals.

  • DD is almost 15 months and does the same thing. The only one she's ever said was duck, but now she doesn't attempt it anymore. I'm with everyone else... Normal.
  • My son only does a couple animals & sounds, but he knows a ton of other words. He's just not really interested in animals right now.

  • Sounds normal to me.  My DD called pigs "la la las" from the book "Moo Baa Lalala" forever.  As long as he is using other words I wouldn't worry.  When he says woof just say "that's right that is a dog."
