Pregnant after IF

Advice needed about OB

Hey Ladies,

I had my first OB appt today since being released from my RE 2 weeks ago. I didn't have an OB so I took a recommendation from a neighbor who recently gave birth. When I made the appointment I had some concerns because the office staff didn't seem very nice. I went today for a 1pm appt and got there at 12:40. It was 1:15 before we saw the financial person who explained costs, then we were told to wait for the nurse who would be right in. We waited at least 20 minutes for her who explained about genetic testing and talked to us for maybe 10-15 tops! Then we had to wait out in the lobby to be called back to see the doctor and waited yet another 35-40 minutes. The doctor came in said his name and said what other medications are you on. I had some questions and he seemed like I was wasting his time. He mentioned about getting me a rx for morning sickness (I am going on a cruise in 2 weeks and wanted something just in case). He then says he wants to see me back in a week for a sonogram and then follow up appt. He then leaves the room. My DH and I were like so what we leave now? So we went to the check out window to book the appts. Unfortunately they don't have anything available until 3/4 and I can't do anything in the morning so we had to split the appointments. So all in all 3 hours from the time I got there until the time I left.

Plus add to this they have 4 offices and I couldn't get an appointment at the 2 closest to us so I am driving further. Sorry I don't mean to sound whiny really. I just don't know if I should try to find a different OB or stick it out. I just talked to my neighbor who said the doctor is really smart and "almost to smart for his own good." She recommended seeing another doctor in the practice and trying to go to a different office. She mentioned how she had similar issues with that office to. So now I am wondering do I find a new doctor or do I just go with the suggestion of trying another doctor in the practice? I kind of want to call up the office manager to say something about my experience but I don't know if it would do any good. Thanks for letting me get all of this out. Any advice or insight is appreciated.

Personally? I'd find another doctor. If you had a bad feeling with him the first time, I think that says a lot about bedside manner. I wouldn't be able to feel comfortable delivering a baby with a doctor who seemingly couldn't give me the time of day. You could try another doctor in the practice, but you may still end up with this guy delivering your baby. I don't think it's uncommon for women who don't have ob's to shop around so to speak.

When I had DD, I thought I liked my OB, but like you, I never really got a good feel for her. Mostly, I felt rushed at appointments. Inevitably, another OB in the practice delivered dd, but she seemed to have an even bigger ego than my ob. When I switched OB's for this pregnancy, I realized what I had been missing! My OB now is so reassuring, easy to talk to, and has no shred of an ego.

I'd say go with whatever feels right to you. Good luck!

  • I know it might make you anxious to change now, but I agree. I left my old OB for some of the same reasons. Just want things to be positive.

  • I would change if I were you! You still have several months to go, and you want to be comfortable with your Dr!

  • I would say go with your gut. And it's probably better to change earlier than later. Have you asked your RE's office if there is anyone they recommend?

  • Its based off what hospital I want to deliver at. There are 3 offices to choose from and my RE said I couldn't go wrong at any of them. She did say if I didn't feel comfortable to try another hence my dilemma now.

  • I agree with PPs. I tried to switch care at 39 weeks with my DS because my OB at the time did not care about my birth plan, although she faked it pretty well up until then - in hindsight, there were some red flags. All of sudden she went from "oh sure you can have a natural birth, blah, blah, blah" to "We need to induce you today" and I ended up with an emergency c-section after a very long and drama filled 2 weeks.  If you don't have a good feeling about him, switch now. You don't want to have to worry about this down the road. Trust your gut, it talks to us for a reason! I think it is more important to have a dr you trust than to deliver at a certain hospital. Your dr will be running the show, so he/she needs to be 100% a partner in your care and birth plan.

  • I did consultations with four care providers before selecting ours. A care provider is an important decision, and I think I would set up consultations at a few doctors and look up "questions to ask a potential OB." Keep the search going while keeping your current OB so that you have a care provider, then switch when you find the right one.

If your pregnancy is low-risk so far, you might consider including a hospital based midwife in your search. Midwives spend more time on average with their patients at each appointment, and the amount of time your OB spent with you is pretty close to average (although he also sounded a little prickly, so the combo would definitely have me looking.)

I for one have been so happy with my midwifery care. Good luck to you!

  • I agree with everyone else- it's one thing to have a staff or office member that's not the most pleasant, it's another to feel uncomfortable with the doc him/herself, and to feel rushed and unimportant. Find someone else.

  • I've been to my OB office twice and they had nothing but time for me.  The 2nd time I waited about 20 minutes past my appointment time but once we got back there they had all the time in the world for us.  I would definitely consider seeing someone else.  This is new and scary and you want to feel like your doctor cares.
