Pregnant after a Loss

Safe while pregnant?

I had a minor surgery today to get a mole removed. They said to put an antibiotic ointment like neosporin, polysporin, or a triple antibiotic ointment on it. I Google and they are category C which have not been tested. And I think I want category B but they are all category C. I feel dumb calling my OB but just want to be safe and don't know what else I would use. Anyone know? ! Thank ladies!

Re: Safe while pregnant?

  • I don't know how they are categorized or how unsafe it would be, but I've never been told to stay away from ointment and definitely wouldn't (and haven't) passed up using it on an open cut or sore. I guess I'm not much help, sorry.

A nurse at my OB recommended an antihistamine that was category C when I was pregnant. So sometimes the benefit of a small amount of category C outweighs the risk.

But if you are concerned, always call. Always.
This for me too. It was a little different but same concept. I was having asthma attacks and my high risk doctor wanted to put me on a cat c med. I was almost crying in the office (silly hormones). But he explained to me that having an asthma attack is worse for baby than the possible risk of the particular cat c drug. I haven't had an asthma attack since and baby is so far doing great.

I'm guessing this is a similar case for you. The risk of infection (or other issue) is probably worse for baby than the risk of the medication. But, yes, call if you are concerned.

  • I had a mole removed last summer, they "punched" the whole thing out, it was on my thigh. I had 3 stitches and was told to keep it moist with Vaseline/petroleum jelly. I was told not to use anything like neosporin.

  • I've had moles shaved off and was told only to use aquaphor not neosporin or anything with antibiotic treatment but I'm assuming since this is an incision with a few stitches and on my face that it's probably a good idea to use the recommended neosporin treatment etc but I will call my OB in the am just to be safe but I can't imagine not putting anything on it. Thanks ladies!

  • I'm not sure where you live- but here we have a hotline called Motherisk and they give specific information about over the counter medications and prescription medications. They have all of the most updated research about medications and will tell you your risks of exposure. I've called them a few times with these questions. Is there anything like that near you? I heard about it from my pharmacist when I asked about the safety of probiotics during pregnancy, and she directed me to Motherisk. Is there a pharmacist you can ask?

  • I believe Neosporin and bacitracin are on the "safe" list my OB's office gave me, but I agree with others that it's probably a good idea to just call and check.
