ACOG: Safe prevention of c-sections

I just read this and though I would share here!

I know in the past there have been discussions on this board about how the maternal health system here in the US needs to be changed. Well it looks like there might be some changes in the future and from ACOG itself! ACOG and SMFM yesterday released a joint statement about safe prevention of c-sections. You can read more about it here:

I like this part about doulas.

Published data indicate that one of the most effective tools to improve labor and delivery outcomes is the continuous presence of support personnel, such as a doula. A Cochrane meta-analysis of 12 trials and more than 15,000 women demonstrated that the presence of continuous one-on-one support during labor and delivery was associated with improved patient satisfaction and a statistically significant reduction in the rate of cesarean delivery (111). Given that there are no associated measurable harms, this resource is probably underutilized.

  • This is a beautiful thing!  The changes will be slow, but I think the wheels have been set into motion.  I applaud the ACOG!

Our c-section rate in this country is just disgusting!  Something needs to be done and maybe this is where it begins.
  • This is fantastic! I've read so many birth stories that ended up in a cesarian that felt like the women were unnecessarily rushed when they weren't given much time to progress on their own or with the assistance of pitocin. So glad to see that they've addressed that issue and many others in this press release.
3 early losses in 2013, but so thankful that our first baby boy is due 3/29/14! <3

  • sheislisamarie for reeeealz. Failure to progress is one of the most laughable reason to head to the OR ever.

  • Great start!
  • I was declared failure to progress and in need of c-section after 24 hours of labor and about 1 hour of pitocin.
