Trouble TTC

IUI #3 is a bust

I was supposed to POAS this morning, but started spotting yesterday :( I couldn't even bring myself to waste the stick this morning as the spotting continued through the night. I'm sad, frustrated, and a little numb. I feel like I cried all I can cry the first two times. I was so hopeful when we started IUIs that this would be all we needed. Now that we've past all three with nothing to show for it, I'm nervous and apprehensive about starting the next steps. As I'm sure many of you can understand, my mind changes daily about what I think the next best steps will be for us. My RE will recommend IVF, but I'm not sure if I'm ready emotionally (or financially) to jump to that right away. I'm seriously looking into acupuncture mostly for the natural aspects and de-stressing while I emotionally regroup. I'm on the fence about doing the lap surgery to check for endo. While I know the lap probably won't change my REs course of treatment (we've talked about it a lot previously) there's a strong part of me that wants to know why. Why isn't my body doing what it should? I know I may not get the answers I expect but at least it's more to rule out. Any advise, words of wisdom? Anyone who had possible endo and did or didn't go forward with surgery? Reasons? Anyway, thanks for listening! You gals are great!

Re: IUI #3 is a bust

  • I'm really sorry about your BFN, they're the worst. I'm really scared for my Beta tomorrow, I may be joining you on a busted IUI #3 :( Hopefully tomorrow is a better day for you. Best of luck in whatever you decide for your treatment going forward!

  • No words of wisdom here, but I wanted to say I'm sorry about the BFN.  I hope you can move on to your next treatment cycle soon.

  • I'm so sorry about your BFN.  It sounds like we're in a smimilar place, if my current cycle ends in a BFN at least.  I've suspected endo for a long time based on strong family history and my unexplained diagnosis.  But I wanted to try a few IUIs before doing a lap.  Now that I'm on my 3rd IUI post-mc, if this cycle fails I think a lap will be my next step.

My personal reasons for not doing it sooner were because I was afraid of the surgery/general anesthesia, but more so that they would go in, find nothing, and I'd end up with adhesions that would cause even more IF problems.  But now I'm at the point where if this cycle fails, it's either that or IVF, and I don't think I'm quite ready to commit to IVF either.  I figure a lap will give me more information and hopefully make it easier to decide whether to do another IUI or move to IVF.

I'm planning to get a second opinion before deciding for sure though, you could always look into that?

  • I'm sorry about your BFN....I did lap surgery fairly early on, but finances had a lot to do with it.  We are OOP, but the surgery was nearly fully covered.  So before spending $3K per IUI or $15K on IVF, I wanted to check what (if anything) was going on, mostly for peace of mind.  If the surgery wasn't as cheap for me, I would have tried 2 or 3 IUIs and done it before spending money on IVF.
Everyone's different though, so there's never a clear answer, which is the frustrating part.

  • I'm so sorry about your BFN on IUI, I've been there 6 times now. I thought for sure it would be our golden ticket to a baby but it hasn't been so far. My RE is willing to do as many as I want but time is a big issue for me. I can see from your siggy that you haven't tried injects with IUI yet. The drugs are quite pricey but it might be worth a shot before moving to IVF if you aren't ready yet. I'm on IUI #7 (2nd full cycle of injects) and I'm finally at peace with moving on to IVF if this cycle doesn't work. I'm just taking a few months off to let my body rest. I'm so sorry that you have to go through this but only you and YH know what is right for you and what your next step should be.
