Extreme couponing moms

Any out there? We have recently started and it's so addicting!

Re: Extreme couponing moms

  • I wouldn't call myself an extreme couponer but I rarely buy anything not on sale of some sort.
I am to lazy to actually sit there and cut coupons.  Online shopping is where it's at.

  • Oh man I was up until 3am clipping coupons last night and literally paid more for a bottle of water at my labor and delivery class than I did at the grocery store this morning. Once I started getting stuff for cheap if not free I was completely addicted.

  • I wish we could do couponing in the uk. We're limited to one per item and cannot be used in conjunction with any other offer. And no money in return. So strict here. I watch extreme couponing and get so jealous. X
  • Same with pp in Canada it's too tough!

But I live in a border city to the US...what sites do you ladies use for coupons? Id love to get some before I go shopping there for groceries

  • I don't understand how to get free stuff? I just do digital coupons but how do I get more $ off?

Yeah, I don't get it either. Is there a website that can teach you how to do it or something?

  • I don't go crazy but I do use coupons/digi coupons to save money on things I was already going to buy. I do buy according to sales and know the best price for items and just stock up on what I'm going to use before it goes on sale again.
  • I combine coupons with sales and can get some great deals. I am by no means an extreme coupon lady or anything but I get good prices. I think if we lived somewhere that I could stockpile a little I would get better at it. But I also live in a small tourist town so prices are higher than the city (over hour drive away) One thing I learned early on was to always figure out price per pound/serving. That has helped a lot to keep costs down as well. Also learning that many off brands are great and others are not worth it at all.
I am hoping after my move (5weeks away!woo!) I will be able to get at little basic stockpile going so I don't have to do too much grocery shopping with a newborn.

Question for the ladies that get lots of coupons. Where do you get them from? Do you buy extra Sunday newspapers? Collect from neighbors? Thanks
  • I do a little couponing but not a lot. I want to learn how to get a lot of the free stuff. I need to research it more!

I get a lot of my coupons from Coupons.com. But you have to use it enough in order to save more than you spend in ink to print them out.

THIS! Publix has online coupons (which I do) and takes competitor's coupons, but I never get coupons in the mail or at my doorstep. I don't have a printer so I can't print them. I would love more coupons!

www.moolasavingmom.com taught me everything I know :) She puts up a spreadsheet once a week for certain grocery stores with all of their sale products, what coupons to use, and from what insert to find them. She makes it extremely easy. Start at the basics and read her "how to" page- that will help you learn the differences between coupons, how to use them, and what the rules are at each different store including walmart, target, cvs, walgreens, etc.

Don't get frustrated- it takes time and patience and you have to completely revamp the way you do and think about grocery shopping. You will still have to spend money on produce and meats, but when you're saving money on the non-perishables, that $10 package of beef won't seem as steep. I literally don't ever pay for shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste, or deodorant. I don't buy toilet paper unless I can buy it for under $0.25 per roll. Stock up on items when they are cheap- stocking is what helps you save! I can afford to wait for deals on those toiletries items because I'm already stocked up on them now from the last time they were on special.

Seriously- the high you get when it's time to check out and you saved more than 50% is amazing. I started doing this to save us money while I'm interning and not making a paycheck, and now I know we can afford for me to stay at home with LO and be comfortable. Plus DH is so turned on when I come home from the store and tell him I only spent $10 of his money that day :P

I buy 2 Sunday papers every week. One for me, and one for DH. We combine paper coupons with electronic coupons that get loaded onto our member card for the store where we shop, and are only allowed to use one paper coupon and one electronic coupon per item. So if we both do it, we can get 2 minimum. The store we shop at allows us to use 3 coupons for 3 of the same item per transaction. So I might have to buy 3, and he will have to buy 3... if that deal is worth getting 6 of. This week I will buy 3 papers because it is the "super doubles" week at our store, which means they will double all coupons up to $2. That's where the free stuff comes in. For example, Old Spice shampoo is on sale for $3.99. I have a $2 off coupon. That will double to $4, making that shampoo free. I can do this 3 times per transaction. Go to the website I posted in my last comment- she provides online coupons for a lot of items that you can print yourself :)

  • Yep- I'm definitely an 'extreme couponer'!
Well..as extreme as my time allows, I guess you could say.  It's definitely very, very addicting.

But I order majority of my coupons online bc I don't have the patience to sit there and cut through 20 different newspapers just to get a good deal.  I'd much rather pay the pennies it ends up costing to have them sent to me.
Majority of the stores in my area (Virginia) have limits on the amount of coupons per household, per day that can be used do they make it extremely difficult.  I also am not a shelf clearer..I buy enough to have a decent stock pile going at a time but I never pass up a good deal (which is at least a 70% savings to me).

Wow, this is great info, thanks so much! It's a bit overwhelming, but it sounds like once you get used to your stores rules, the easier it'll be.

    I don't, DH does :)
  • Our local grocery store doubles coupons that are 1 dollar and under two days a week.
We get 2 weekly newspaper subscriptions for the coupons. It's WAY cheaper than buying them each week. I follow deals on hip2save.com and pocketyourdollars.com.

I have a junk email so I can sign up for companies I like and often get coupons. Even organicgirl salad sends me coupons by email a lot. I have a Kohls card and shop the clearance rack with 30% off coupons. I got most of my maternity clothes there and pay about 5 bucks an item.

Our local gas station will accept competitors's coupons, so we almost always save 10 cents a gallon by clipping coupons from the back of grocery receipts.

  • I was an extreme
Couponer for 6 months one time and really enjoyed t but I just don't have the time now. I used the Krazycouponlady website as well as their book. Both were excellent to teach you how. I'd start with the book first. Good luck!
  • I like the Krazy Coupon Lady, too. I have 4 newspapers delivered on Sunday. Call your local paper and see what kind of a deal they can give you for multiples - mine would be $2.50 at the store price, but I get each one for $1. As long as I save more than $4 a week with coupons, I figure it's worth it. CVS is my favorite place for compounding. It's pretty simple, and you can get a lot of free stuff. I haven't paid for shampoo or razors in over a year.
