UTI

Has anyone's LO had a UTI? V has had a fever since Monday night and it reached 101.9 this morning so we took her to the dr and it looks like a UTI. I'm alternating between worrying that it may have been caused by some sort of poor diaper changing practices on my part or that it's due to a kidney problem. Anyone have any experience /advice? I feel so sorry for her. We couldn't get enough pee at the dr to send a sample to their lab (they got just enough to do a test with a dipstick) so I have had little bags taped to her labia all afternoon trying to catch more. I think we got 3 mL. :(

Sorry you are dealing with this, I have been there and it isn't fun when they are sick and yes we have experience with this. Our LO had kidney reflux and is at an increased risk for UTIs so she has been taking prophylactic  antibiotics since birth to reduce the chance of her getting one. She did get one when she was 1 month old and we spent a week in the hospital on IV antibiotics, hers was caused by an improperly inserted catheter during a test to check her kidney function.

I know it is a scary thing to deal with/worry about but from our experience with the childrens hospital and the pediatric urologist we have learned that usually the biggest issue is that numerous UTIs is what causes kidney damage so even if she has something like our daughter (which is more common in girls) it is easily treated and they often outgrow it by the time they are toddlers.

Hope that helps and if you have any questions feel free to ask and I will answer as best I can.

Is your dr doing a wait and see if she has more before seeing a urologist?

  • Thanks, everyone. @lizziebooper, I'm sorry you're dealing with the reflux. I'm familiar with it because coincidentally, V's twin, E, had dilated kidneys through the second half of my pregnancy and they were worried abut her developing kidney reflux. She was on a precautionary antibiotic for her first 6 weeks and had an ultrasound at 6 weeks old and she was fine. So now I'm hoping we aren't dealing with that with V.

I'm also hoping the babies weren't mixed up - there was some confusion at birth about which was twin A and which twin B as they'd changed positions in the last few weeks in utero. My OB swore up and down she got them right, but this has me a little nervous again.

@lizziebooper, sorry, I didn't answer your questions. Yesterday in the office we caught just enough pee to do a dipstick test, and it tested positive for a few things indicative of a UTI. We didn't get enough to send to the lab to find out which type of UTI it is and which type of antibiotic she needs, so we were sent home with some extra little bags to try to catch more in. We only got 3 mLs last night so we are trying to get a little more this morning. I guess after they do the lab tests we'll know more?

  • I hope she is feeling better!!! And I'm sorry you are worried about a possible mix up. Can they check both girls kidneys?

  • I hope for V this is just a one time thing and not a mix up with the girls. Don't let yourself worry too much ( I know easier said then done) but even if she does have reflux I wouldn't think it to be severe if this is her first UTI.  Try and remember that if it is reflux it alone isn't dangerous it is the repeated infections that cause damage and if she takes antibiotics they will keep the infections away until she outgrows the reflux.

If it were me I would request a renal scan to confirm/rule out the reflux because of the possible mix up with the girls. Even though I wouldn't want  her to have to undergo the test I would rather know for sure if she does/doesn't have it in order to start antibiotics and prevent future infections and possible damage.

  • Oh goodness. I thought my LO had a UTI once because of a foul smelling diaper, so I gave her a bunch of water to flush her system and that helped. Obviously, it sounds like you LO needs antibiotics. I get UTIs a lot. It took a while to figure out why but it is part of my anatomy. For me it is very important to stay hydrated as well. I hope your daughter doesn't have to deal with that regularly. They are miserable.
