Success after IF

9m old only wants to fall asleep in my arms and in my bed. Phase I hope??

My son will only reach the sleep finish line if I cuddle him in my arms in my bed. He now cries and stands in his crib pounding on the sides until I pick him up no matter how tired he is. He wasn't like this before - I would rub his back or his hair and he would roll over and pass out. Now it's a whole production. I made the mistake of cuddling him once. Also, he won't STTN anymore... He wakes up and won't go back to sleep unless it's in my bed. I just want some sleep already! Please tell me this is a phase???!!!

Re: 9m old only wants to fall asleep in my arms and in my bed. Phase I hope??

  • I feel your pain. I was up between 10:30 and 3:30 with one of my 9 mo. old twins last night. He recently started crawling and pulling up on things, and he is having the worst time calming down for naps and sleeping at night. It a also seems like he and his sister like to have teeth come in in clusters rather than one at a time (same thing with their older brother) and I can't imagine that's very pleasant.

I remember going through something similar around this age with DS1 (although, I never had to bring him into bed with me). IMO, it's just a developmental thing. They are learning how to do so many things and just trying to wrap their little brains around all of it. The inability to communicate their needs also seems to play a role around this age. I started to teach DS1 to sign when he was about this age and it definitely helped. I am going to start using the signing DVDs for the twins and practicing with them daily.

Hang in there mama. It will pass. I know it sucks in the meantime :-(

  • It is probably just a phase or a new development. But that is about the time I lost my patience with E's inability to sleep and finally broke down and sleep trained at 10 months. Maybe give it a week and see if it gets better, then start researching sleep training methods if not?
TTC with PCOS since November 2009

This (and creepishly this is the second post this AM I have essentially stolen TJ's response ;)

My LO was a decent but not perfect sleeper, she got sick at 9.5 months and after that would only really sleep if you held her, she would literally be snoring on your shoulder - you'd put her down and she's cry 10 min later. At 10 months even we did CIO. By the third night she only cried for a minute at bedtime. Now 3 weeks later she doesn't cry at bed - goes right to sleep and this week has slept 12 hours through the night without waking up once.

It's not for everyone but I am a huge believer in sleep training. It has been a total game changer around here.

he's getting in 4 teeth all at the same time and he's starting to cruise and he just started chewing real food. I'm going to go easy on him... Going to sleep train him when we move if it's still bad.
