Spanking at school

Please forgive me for sharing a link from Faux News:

https://foxnewsinsider.com/2014/02/19/proposed-bill-would-allow-ks-teachers-spank-kids-harder

Wtf? Do any of you live in KS? They allow spanking in schools? One of my friends shared this on FB, and I could feel my blood pressure rising as I read some of the comments, and then I just had to stop.

I'm sure this is a highly divisive topic, but I really can't understand how someone would say that it's ok for teachers or administrators to spank their child, especially the kind of spanking that would leave a mark.

Re: Spanking at school

  • Huh?  So it's not enough for me to bruise my own child, I want teachers to have the ability to bruise my child as well?

I went to middle school in TN and they send home forms for your parents to sign allowing spanking, and they used paddles. I only saw it used 2 or 3 times though.

ETA: This was about 8 years ago, but I doubt it's changed.

  • Its still technically allowed in some NC schools but I doubt it is actually used. So ridiculous.
  • I'm in Kansas and have been my entire life.  Corporal punishment was never used at my school and has never been at my kids' school.  I don't know what schools in the state do allow it?

  • This makes me sad. No one puts a hand on my kid with the intent to cause pain.

Yes, and not just pain -- red marks and bruising.  They can already administer corporal punishment, apparently, but want to bump it up a notch to knock some respect into those evil Kansas schoolchildren.

  • It's appalling that this is legal so many places.  I had no idea.  I would flip my shit if anyone laid a hand on one of my kids.

I would never allow that and would flip the frack out if anyone spanked my kids. I'm shocked that this is still allowed in schools and that there is a proposal to allow people to leave marks on kids at all. I'm a non-spanker who was 'spanked' that was abusive. If you leave a mark-you've gone too far. That's not okay- no matter who's doing it. Parents, teachers, other type of caregivers-no care.

  • I am very non-confrontational, but I would get all up in the face of whomever laid a hand on my child.  There is no way I would not make a scene.

  • I don't agree with it at all, but it totally wasn't a big deal to anyone I knew growing up. Besides the teacher thing, parents of other kids pretty much had permission to spank anyone who was at their house (in my neighborhood, but I'm sure it wasn't the only one).

I don't know why but this made me cringe and want to vomit. I don't think I could work at that school, let alone allow that to happen to my kid.
  • You hit my kid, I hit you.  And I don't stop hitting you.  NOBODY lays a hand on my child.  NOBODY.

  • My sister in law is a teacher in Georgia, where apparently Corporal punishment is practiced. I find it disgusting and lazy (on the parents who allow it). My SIL said only one kid in the class was exempt by waiver, everyone else was allowed to be physically punished at the discretion of their teachers.

There's no way I would allow this for my child, and there is no way I would allow this to be practiced in front of my child.

How does this work in your sisters school? Do teachers have to spank for certain infractions, or can they opt out delivering physical punishment if they are against it? And if some teachers can opt out, is that fair to the poor kids stuck with the teacher who will spank?

I'm not sure about all the details, however I believe they can punish at their discretion, but have to adhere to specific types of punishments. I'm not sure about teachers who choose to abstain from the practice however, and I will bring this up with her because I am now curious as to how this is handled.
