Baby girl name pronunciation

DH and I love the baby girl name Kiera. (We pronounce it like the actress Kiera Knightley does). My only hesitation is that some people don't know how to say it, they say Ciara (see-ara) or something else. Wondering, how would you pronounce Kiera?

Re: Baby girl name pronunciation

  • My initial reaction is key-rah, but would have no problem using key-ar-ah once I heard her called that.
  • Keer-ah.

    I would say Keer-uh. One of my best friends growing up was Kira, pronounced the same way. I always thought Kira was less confusing, because I've seen it spelled Kiera and Keira. I like the name though.

    ETA according to google, Keira Knightly spells it this way? ei not ie?

  • Yea I saw that on google too. I know this is nerdy but I always think of the rule "I before e except after c" lol! Our daughter wouldn't be named after Knightley, we just would pronounce her name the same way. I like Kira too but it makes me think of Star Wars ...
  • According to IMDB the actress spells it Keira which I personal like a lot better and I think would cut down on a lot of pronunciation problems.

    Keer-ah. I love this name. The celtic version is Ciara which I can see being mispronounced more.

  • Kiera = Key Air Uh
    Keira = Keer Uh

  • I would pronounce it Keer-uh also but I much prefer the spelling Keira.  The whole i before e except after c is not always true.  Take the words science and conscience.

  • I didn't ask for spelling suggestions but thanks for you're input on the pronunciation! Like I said she will not be named after Knightley, my husband and I just like the name:) I'm team green and have a feeling I'm having a boy, so this baby may not be Kiera after all.
