milk transiton

We're getting close to 1 year and I'm wondering how other moms are doing/going to do the transition off of formula (or breastmilk of you're planning to wean at a year)

Right now dd still has about 3-4 solid 8 ounce bottles a day plus three meals. She gets snacks if she wants them but I feel like that's what the bottles are in the place of at the moment. So do i just start giving her snacks instead? I'm sure she'll still get a bottle at night and maybe the occasional nap, she's no where near ready to be bottle free yet.

What is everyone else doing?

Re: milk transiton

  • My ped told me that at a year or close to I can start replacing 1 feeding per week with whole milk.  So based on what you give her it would take 3-4 weeks to transition to just whole milk.

I have frozen BM to work through, so I am going to start replacing 1 nursing session with a bottle of frozen milk and then start around 14 months with whole milk.

We are doing 3 solid meals a day and some snacks, but not too many.  He nurses 5 times a day getting around 4 oz each time.

  • I used to be active on this board when I was pregnant, but haven't posted in a long time.

I have the exact same question!  How do you start to transition from giving them most of their calories through breastmilk/formula, to giving most of their calories through food?  My guy gets 2 meals a day in addition to his 4 bottles and nighttime nursing session.  But those meals come after the bottles, so as to not fill up on the foods and sacrifice the calories of the milk.

The whole concept of this confuses me.  Am I supposed to give him less in his bottles and more in the way of foods?  I'm wishing I had done more BLW so this would have taken care of itself.

I started last month by replacing 1oz of formula w whole Milk. Then each week replaced another oz. He is now completely on whole milk as of last week. He will be 1 in two weeks. Our dr said we can start w the whole milk at 11m.

Eta: when ds wakes up he gets 8oz milk. And he is completely on solid foods and has 3 meals a day. Then before bed he gets 6oz of milk.

  • I followed my son. He started to refusing to drink the formula so I started adding 1oz whole milk in there to get him to drink it. We started that about 3 weeks ago. He just turned 11 months on the 14th. I am slowly adding more milk than formula now. but it is still mostly formula. Except for dinner when he gets milk in his cup. I am just going to continue to follow his cues for now.

  • Funny, I just asked my new mama group this same question today! DS eats 3 meals and 1 snack every day and has three 5oz bottles of BM at daycare. I'm going to keep nursing part time for a while but I am ready to be done pumping at work. I plan to start by replacing 1 bottle/day with WCM and see how that goes, if it's going well after a week we'll go to 2 bottles/day of WCM and then all 3 the next week.

The AAP has a website for parents- healthychildren.org and it has some articles on baby and toddler nutrition. I think you are right that bottles are like snacks right now. You could try giving your LO a morning or afternoon snack more regularly to see if it changes the amount she drinks from a bottle.

I'm still kinda wondering this too. DS still nurses fairly often, and will take a sippy of BM if I'm not around. He never took bottles well. We did BLW, so I guess we'll not worry so much about offering the breast before solids. But really,,I don't worry too much about that ow as he seems to still nurse every couple of hours.

I'm open to EBF, but I'm also pregnant. So we'll probably start with some in a sippy. Maybe with meals? I just want him to be able to take it in case my supply dries up from the pregnancy.
EBF= extended, not exclusive in this case.
  • A month ago I started replacing 1oz. Of formula with whole milk. Now I am using 1 scoop of formula per 6oz. Bottle. .. I'm trying to finish the can up. Once in a while I'll give my son a bottle of just while milk. I decided to start to transition just after 10 months to give my son a whole 2 months before he turns 1 year to get used to whole milk. He has been doing really well with the milk that he will be on it all together before he is 1 which is March 12. I say do what you are comfortable with.
  • DD is almost 11 months & just saw her pedi yesterday.  Doc told us it's ok to start transitioning her now since she's already eating milk products and has been fine (ice cream, cottage cheese, cheese, etc).  She suggested adding an ounce of whole milk a week until formula is phased out. She also eats 3 meals a day of mostly normal food although she does get baby food for lunch at DC for the time being.  At DC she also has two 4 oz bottles of formula and 6 ounces of juice/water mixed. She might have another 4 oz bottle when she gets home and about 6 oz before bed and when she wakes up in the morning.  I gave her a little milk last night at dinner and she loved it...but then the kid will eat anything you put in front of her.   :D
