Which spelling would you choose? I don't want him to have to correct peoples spelling of his name for his whole life. We've already ruled out Rhys as an option.

Re: Reese or Reece? Baby boy name

  • I MUCH MUCH MUCH prefer Rhys (it's one of our top choices - love the original Welsh spelling) - this spelling is used just as often as Reece.

However, Reese is typically used for girls (ranks at #128, I believe), while Reece & Rhys are used for boys.  So if you don't use Rhys, then use Reece.

This. I prefer Rhys for a boy. All the Rhys I know are male and all the Reese's I know are girls.
  • Rhys is the only one that is strictly masculine nowadays.

  • I prefer Rhys by far

  • I think you should reconsider Rhys. I would assume Reese or Reece was a girl.

  • Rhys is the only one that distinguishes sex (IMO).  However, I think that he will be forced to spell his name with whatever spelling you choose since there are 3 generally accepted spellings.  Our DS is Reed and people always say "R-e-e-d?  or R-e-i-d?" It's going to happen.
  • Rhys is the only way I like it spelled
  • I really don't like the name at all, SS vote here.

That's better than what I got from one of the OBs at our practice.

OB: Have you decided on a name yet?
Me: Yes. We're naming him Reed.
OB: oh like "Read" a book?
Me: No. How did you get through medical school?
  • Another vote for: Rhys is best, but if not Rhys then use Reece. Because Reese is for girls :)

  • I picked SS. I like Rhys. Why did you rule out Rhys? It is the original Welsh spelling. Reece and Reese are going to be pretty interchangeable depending on who you ask, he will always probably clarify spelling to at least someone. Though I do think Reece is a little more boy and Reese is a little more girl.

That is funny. The only Reed I ever knew IRL (before DS) spelled it Read! Hahah
  • Reese would probably be the "default" spelling, while Reece (of your choices) would have the least gender confusion. So go with Reese if you'd be more frustrated with correcting the spelling, or Reece if you'd be more annoyed with people assuming he's a girl.
  • My son's MN is Reece.
  • The only way I would see this name these days and definitely assume boy would be the Rhys spelling
  • I know you ruled out Rhys but that's my preference for a boy!

  • Thanks for your time and opinions ladies! Rhys was ruled out by my boyfriend, and since I was the one to pick the name, I decided to respect his choice of spelling. I even showed him this thread and he still said no (Rhys was my original choice too)

Now, just need to pick the middle name. Poor little guy is already 10 days old.

  • Sweetie, men know nothing. You can't let them make important decisions like this. If you like Rhys and know it's the correct spelling use it. Let him pick a MN

He wants to use Rocketman as a middle name....

  • Voted Reece, but prefer Rhys
  • SS: I don't really like this name, but if you are doing it for a boy, go with Rhys.
  • I love Reece and really hate Rhys. I had to google how to say it when I first saw it.
  • If Rhys wasn't an option for a boy I would choose a different name.

I have a Rhys Clayton. Reece would have been other way we spelled it. We debated it at the time as well.

Looks like you got a real mature one there.

In all honesty pick whatever feels right. That's what really matters.
  • People are constantly saying "rise" when they read Rhys. I think It was a good decision to stick with either Reece or Reese.
  • I don't like any of the spellings. Rhys always makes me say rice. I'm really just soooo, so sick of hearing this name. But if I had to chose I guess I would pick Reece.
  • Lol! Yes, it is. Why did it get brought back to life lol. Woops.
  • This thread is old. I'm sure she's picked a spelling by now :) .

I did pick a spelling ;) We went with Reece. He's an adorable 8 month old now. There are times I wish we'd gone with Rhys, but I almost everyone spells his name the way we chose. And in case anyone is interested, which I doubt they are we went with Henry for a middle name. So now it's two chocolate bars. Oops :)

I'm the oddball who doesn't like the Rhys spelling. Every time I see it, my brain so wants to say "Rise," even though I know it's Reese. I'd never side eye it, but I'd never use it myself.

  • I think you need to get Rhys back in there. Reese, like Avery, is becoming a unisex name. I have tons of baby girl Reeses in my fb feed. And Reece strikes me as candy. Rhys is still solidly masculine.
