Parenting after 35

Baby product input please :)

Ok Mommies, was wondering if you would weigh in on a few baby items.
1. Diaper Genie vs Arm & Hammer Munchkin I registered for Genie but sister bought Munchkin. (Genie was out of stock) I think I am liking what I see about Munchkin better. Any thoughts?
2. Bottle drying rack........waste of time and money? If good idea, are cheaper ones as good as more expensive?
3. Which sterilizer do you prefer? Is there much difference between them?
4. Will be doing a combo breast feed and pump to bottle feed. We are going to use Dr. Browns bottles. I registered for all stage nipples but probably won't receive them at shower so I was thinking of buying one stage at a time just in case baby does't like the nipples. We have 15 bottles that a friend gave us (she didn't use but tossed nipples and gave us bottles) how many nipples of each stage do you think we need? Your input is much appreciated

Re: Baby product input please :)

  • Hey Rascus!  I remember you from when I was on the PG after 35.  Here are my 2 cents for what its worth.

    1. Diaper Genie vs Arm & Hammer Munchkin:  I don't have either I have the baby trend diaper champ deluxe.  I like it better than either because it contains the smell of diapers pretty well and you can use any garbage bag instead of having to buy expensive refills.

    2. Bottle drying rack........waste money.  I just use my dish drying rack and all is well.

     3. Which sterilizer do you prefer? I don't have a sterilizer at all.  I use the Medela sanitizing bags every once in a blue moon.  I pop bottles in the dishwasher on the steri cyle and they get clean.

    4. Nipples:  I think its a good idea to go one stage at a time.  If you will be offering bottles frequently I would say start with at least 4 so you don't have to wash them 5 million times a day.  You will be in the stage 1 nipples for quite a while so you have time to purchase stage 2.

If you have access to a Burlington Coat Factory I would check them out for baby stuff they carry all the name brands but way cheaper than BRU or BBB.

    Hope that helps.

  • Hi Rascus!  FTM here, so I don't know how much my opinion really counts since we've only been going at it for 3 1/2 months, but like Geeps, I'll put my 2 cents in as well.

    1. Diaper Genie vs Arm & Hammer Munchkin I registered for Genie but sister bought Munchkin. (Genie was out of stock) I think I am liking what I see about Munchkin better. Any thoughts?  I have a Diaper Genie.  Target has their Up & Up brand refills that work in it just fine and save some money.  We have two dogs, so I felt it was important for us so they wouldn't somehow get a dirty diaper.  We do end up emptying it every 3-4 days, it's amazing how quickly it fills up!

    2. Bottle drying rack........waste of time and money? If good idea, are cheaper ones as good as more expensive?  I didn't get one of these, I use a towel and put washed bottles, nipples, and breast pump parts on it overnight.

    3. Which sterilizer do you prefer? Is there much difference between them? I either put stuff in the dishwasher or boil it if necessary.

I don't use Dr Browns, but the Playtex Drop Ins bottles and nipples.  So I don't have anything to offer you on this one.

I like to check Amazon for reviews when thinking about buying stuff.  Plus their prices are sometimes cheaper, as long as you can wait a week before receiving what you want.

    Lurker chiming in :)

    1. Diaper Genie vs Arm & Hammer Munchkin - I had a Diaper Champ with my first and just a regular trash can for my 2nd.  Once they start eating table food, the smell (at least for me) didn't go away.  I think a regular stainless can will keep smells at bay better than plastic.
    2. Bottle drying rack........waste of time and money? I never used one - just a towel on the counter.
    3. Which sterilizer do you prefer? Is there much difference between them? I used the Medela bag that you put in the microwave.  Very convenient.  Otherwise we washed in the dishwasher.
Hard to remember but maybe 5-10?  Neither of my kids moved up in the nipple stages - at least when they recommended.  I think my son moved up one stage but my dd never did.  They always seemed to choke on the increased flow.

We have a Diaper Genie and love it.  The refills are pricey so we just through poop diapers in there.  Pee diapers go in the regular trash.  A little smell will come out when the lid is open but we don't notice anything (and others don't either, I've asked) if the lid is closed.  I have not had the A&H Munchkin so I cannot speak to it.

     2. Bottle drying rack........waste of time and money? If good idea, are cheaper ones as good as more expensive?
We have one.  Love it!  That is where we store the bottles instead of in a cabinet losing space we desparately need.  I handwash all our bottles.

    3. Which sterilizer do you prefer? Is there much difference between them? I have the Munchkin microwave sterilizer.
With DS1 I used it after every bottle use (well, 4 bottles so it was full) for the first couple weeks.  Then I just sterilized everything weekly for a month or two.  Then just stopped.
With DS2 I used it to sterilize the bottles when we took them out of storage and again the day we brought him home so we knew they were clean.  I've used it maybe twice more in the past 4 months.

    4. Will be doing a combo breast feed and pump to bottle feed. We are going to use Dr. Browns bottles. I registered for all stage nipples but probably won't receive them at shower so I was thinking of buying one stage at a time just in case baby does't like the nipples. 15 is a lot if they are all one size.  If they are about half 4oz size and half 8oz size then that is a good amount.
I FF only and use 5 or 6 bottles in a 24-hour period at 4 months.  I used more when he was younger and ate more often.  The only bad thing about Dr. Brown's is all the pieces and parts.
As far as the nipples, I buy one for each bottle in the size I will be using during that stage plus 1 or 2 extra.  Fox example: you have 6 4oz bottles then I would by 8 nipples.  If you have 8 8oz bottles I would buy 10 nipples. Not one for all 14 total bottles.  Does this makes sense?).  I buy the extra one or two because the holes can tear (if you accidentally cram the cleaning brush through it).  I buy each stage as needed right around the age mark on the stages (NB for Level 1, 3 months for Level 3, 6 months for Level 3, and 9 months for Level Y).  Not sure why it is Level Y and not Level 4 besides the fact that at that leve the whole becomes a Y cut instead of the circular hole the other stages have.

  • Thank you so much ladies!  Your input really gives me something to go on.  I was feeling a bit overwhelmed.  We just had our baby shower and will have a second shower on March 8th.  I am starting my list of things we still need so we can purchase them.  I have been putting off some of the purchases thinking we still have plenty of time.  Now I am on bedrest and can't go shopping so will have to send DH or order online.  I have now realized baby will be here soon so I can't put these purchases off any longer :)

  • Good Luck!  Let us know when your little bundle arrives :)  Sorry you have to be on bed rest, that really stinks.

Late to the party but just a couple thoughts...I have the diaper genie and love it. Not only is it great if you have dogs but when your kid gets older they can't open it from the front. Also, I have the Prince Lionheart colapsable bottle rack and I just can't rave about it enough. It's not ugly, it doesn't take up a lot of space and it easily slides flat into any space for storage when not in use. We have ours set up on the counter and use it all day every day as I am pumping and have to constantly wash all the parts. LOVE IT. I don't use a sterilizer, I just boil everything before the first use and boil again if it ever needs to be sterilized again which is hardly ever.

  • 1. I have munchkin and it works fine. Keep in mind that once your baby starts solids nothing will contain that poop smell for long. Our poopy diapers go straight to the outside trash bin

2 if you are going to wash bottles by hand a dry rack is helpful. Ours got loads of use. I also did combo feeding

    3. Sterilizer not needed!

    4. We managed with four bottles. They were washed every night by hand. It was nice to not have bottles everywhere but if I had to do over then I would have two sets: one to wash in the dish washer and the other ready for use.

We used stage 1 nipples for too long. By the time I remembered to switch to a faster flow I ended up buying two stage 2 and two stage 3. Dd just used both.

Don't overbuy bottles or nipples. You can always buy more when needed. Otherwise it is just more crap to store and a potential waste of money.
