I was just told no carbs or sugars for breakfast (they make us do a morning appt.) Basically, no cereal, breads, juice, etc...Just high proteins like bacon and eggs.
I was just told not to eat anything sugary within at least a few hours before the appointment. Of course I forgot and accidentally ate a bowl of fruit a couple hours before, but I still managed to pass, so I guess it was ok.
My doctors office said go first thing in the morning and don't eat from midnight the night before. It was the same thing when I had DS, morning appointment and stop eating at or before midnight.
I am actually going later today. I was told not to fast, but not to eat anything sugary. I had a bagel for breakfast and some of you are saying no carbs.. Now I'm worried that I screwed up. I hope not!
We've had this discussion a few times and people have gotten a range of answers from their doctors but according to the AMA you do NOT fast for the1 hour, you only fast for the 3 Hour. It is frustrating as fasting before the 1 hour is likely the cause of many false high readings for some.

I've heard that protein is ideal to have beforehand because it helps regulate the sugar.
I was told to eat whatever I wanted but not to eat an hour before drinking the sugary drink and no eating while waiting that hour before drawing blood. I had a co-worker tell me I was going to fail bc I had a pb&j sandwich and fruit for lunch. Honestly if your body is producing sugar fine then your blood test should be fine. That's how I thought of it.
I had to fast for 12 hours prior to the 2 hour and obviously during. I wanted water so bad during the test but they said no. Who cares though it's over and I passed, found out today and going to ice cream tonight which is in reality going to be about a pound of delicious toppings.
kelseyandrobertThanks! I was told no foods or drinks including water during the fasting. I'm not sure if that was just my office's rule or not though. I hydrated like crazy the night before which helped but I was not allowed to have water even after the first draw. The tech said it could affect my results although I don't know why. I also ate only protein the night before per my midwife's directions because she said it helps keep you from getting sick during. GL!
No fasting before my 1hr, but I was told to eat only protein for breakfast. Not allowed to drink water during the test.
I had a special carb loading diet for three days prior to the 3hr test and had to fast (no water even) from midnight until the end of the test. Actually felt better after the 3hr than I did after the 1hr- hoping that means I passed.

I didn't have to fast.. My doc actually told me to make sure I eat the day I do it. I didn't have a set appt I could walk in whenever. I decided to do it in the morning to just get it over with. The only thing I wasn't allowed to eat was sugary stuff. My doc suggest eggs and toast with butter for breakfast. So that's what I had.

Sorry...I am more of a lurker, but since I have had this conversation repeatedly over the last few weeks, I thought I would chime in. Both my doc and my maternity counselor (work-sponsored healthy pregnancy program) said that the purpose of the test is to basically pull any random person off the street and test them, so fasting can produce a false outcome. They said eat normally, don't eat too close to the test (more because you need to be able to get the syrup down without getting too full/interacting with something else in your stomach), and to not eat large quantities of sugary, carb-laden foods that day.
The 3-hour test requires fasting. I had to do it with my 1st and it was the worst!
I have mine tomorrow morning and was told not to fast but to try and not eat anything sugary or any carbs.....she said eat a lot of protein and veggies....
I had to fast at least two hours before the one hour test. Eat like I normally do. So as to not alter the test results. I had mine last Friday so I'm hoping that I passed.

This is the best idea ever. I'm going to tell DH if I pass the test we're going to Carroll's Cup, where it's totally do-it-yourself ice cream and frozen yogurt, with a huge buffet of topping options. (and, of course, if I don't pass it's sackcloth and ashes and maybe some meatloaf.)

Same here. But, tomorrow I have to go for the 3 hour because my numbers were slightly elevated, and for that I do have to fast prior.
