Intense rib pain. Having trouble even breathing.

So about two days ago I woke up with some pain in my upper right ad omen, just under my ribs. The pain has gotten progressively worse. I spent the day at the hospital yesterday and they couldn't figure out why I was having such bad pain. They did an abdominal ultrasound and didn't see anything. Sometimes the pain is so bad I cannot even walk or take a deep breath. Has this ever happened to anyone else. If so, what do you do for the pain????

  • You need to call your OB. If the ER couldn't diagnose you, a bunch of strangers on the internet aren't going to be able to either.

  • Yea, I'm going to call tomorrow. I wasn't in the er I was in the birthing unit at my hospital. It was pretty frustrating though I just want to feel better. I'm just curious to see if anyone else has been through it.
  • I'm confused about why you were in the birthing unit and not the ER. Your pain could have nothing to do with the baby.

  • They just sent me right up there when I got to the hospital. Everything is fine with the baby. So it's something going on with me, which is why they decided on doing an abdominal ultrasound but of course that didn't show anything...
  • And my point of this post was not to look for a diagnosis on the internet. I'm looking to see if any other moms have been through this.
  • Well that's what I did yesterday and they sent me right to the hospital. They didn't find anything so they of course sent me home. I'm still in pain though. It has improved because all I've been doing is resting but it's still there.
  • yes.  I had severe pain in my left rib when I was pregnant with DD.  I've had a touch of it this time, but not nearly as bad (at least not yet).

Do you have a long commute, or stand a lot for work?  I think that contributed to mine, with the added weight and re-distribution of organs to make room for baby.  They did bloodwork and an ultrasound of my organs... but nothing came up.

I used a heating pad, being careful not to place it where baby was.  I'm still not sure if it was a great idea, but it hurt so bad.  I also used a little bit of rub A535.  You can check with your dr to see if these things are okay for you to use.

  • I do stand a lot for work so maybe that does have something to do with it. They recommended to use a heating pad to I've been trying that but it doesn't make a huge difference! The baby is VERY active so maybe he kicked me the wrong way. Who knows! :(
  • Rib Flare.  I have it too. Blows.  This list is the internet version of what my OB gave me to help.  I also take Extra Strength Tylenol (1 every 5 hours or 2 every 6) per OB's recommendation whenever the pain gets too bad.  The stretch really helps when I'm unlazy enough to do it...otherwise, I use my heating blanket.

  • Thanks I'm definitely going to check that out!
  • OH!  I used to arch my back across an exercise ball too... That really helped to stretch it out.
