Question about first OB appt

Hey ladies,

I hope everyone is doing well. I found an article on the bump about your first OB appointment and what to ask. Just wondering if any of you guys have any questions that I should ask at my appointment. I fired my OB last year so I am going to my neighbors OB on a recommendation. Any help or advice would be appreciated.

GL. I wrote down a huge list.....I want to have a doula and wanted to be sure he wasn't going to balk at that, I want a natural birth, wanted to know his feelings on different laboring positions (not just on the back) he delivers out of two hospitals and I wanted to know if I was registered at one, and he was down working in his office near the other, would he come up to me or make me go to him, wanted to know if he felt like labor was a dictatorship or a partnership, was he available 24/7 and if not who was on call, etc. I'm actually having mixed emotions about my OB right now. We went for our u/s Monday and were scheduled with Dr Tuesday. We waited over an hour for the dr and he spent less than 10 minutes with us! All he said was "have sex like normal, exercise like normal, fish 2x/week, sushi 2x/month, take your prenatals. I want you to come back in 3weeks and we will do an u/s to make sure the heart is still beating." DICK! I was so upset. I told him I had a lot of questions about the birth (Some are above lol) he told me it was way too early to talk about that and he wasn't considering me an OB patient until after the next u/s! He's been my gyn for a couple years, but I'm not getting the warm fuzzies about having him be my OB....

OMG that sounds awful. I have 3 OB's who are covered by my insurance who deliver at the hospital I like, so I figure if I don't like this office I have 2 other offices to try out. My RE was very specific about making sure I like my OB and that if I don't to find someone else. Good Luck to you!

Where I go I will see the same two doctors and midwife throughout the pregnancy, but it could be one of twenty different OBs at delivery. I am okay with this because I really like the group I am with, but you should ask about on call/delivery, etc. I would also ask about how often they will see you during pregnancy and if they do ultrasounds in office or elsewhere. Not getting an u/s every visit was a hard adjustment for me after the RE.

I would jot down questions based on the concerns u specifically had through your cycle as far as hormone levels go. With our first appt we were rly nervous after stopping crinone and being worried that the placenta isnt doing its thing yet or is not providing enough. And the OB was very thorough in addressing our concerns n made us feel so much better in that regard.

We also about the MFM drs she worked with and how that team will work as I will be seeing them both. I asked her opinion about exercise during pregnancy. And thats about it. she was kind of surprised as first time pregnancy I didnt have more questions. Since we were ttc for so long a lot of that time was spent reading on anything and everything pregnancy related so I had a good basic knowledge of the "what to do/not to do"

u can also ask if you will be having a consult to discuss the timeline of your appts throughout the pregnancy just to give u an outline of what to expect so u can plan accordingly. That was something I didnt know until the OB nurse told me I would have one appt dedicated to going over my timeline and setting up as many future appts early on as id like. And im a control freak so I loved that piece of mind knowing whats gonna happen step by step.
