DD2 has recently had a shift in her mood and dirty diapers. Her poop went from seedy yellow to yellow with little strands in it. Today, the strands were an army green color. I've been reading about mucous in the poop -- is this what that is? She's been very upset the last few days and looks uncomfortable (with arching) for almost an hour after a feeding. I've been thinking that was because I am still dealing with oversupply and really forceful letdown. The change in poop is throwing me off though. She's now also making little bubbles with her mouth too (not sure if that's significant). At first, I thought maybe we were still dealing with the 3w growth spurt because she's been feeding every 2 hours (just during the day) although the feedings are pretty short.
Is this normal? Does this sound like I need to remove something from my diet because of the little strands (mucous?) and color change? I developed mastitis last weekend and have completed the antibiotics (z pack) already. Could that be creating mucousy poop? I feel clueless and helpless. TIA for any help!!
Re: Mucousy Poop
Mucous in baby's poo looks just like it sounds. Globs of snot in the diaper...color doesn't matter. Mucous indicates that something (maybe dairy maybe something else) is bothering baby's stomach. The only way to figure out what is to eliminate things from your diet and see if symptoms get better. Dairy can take up to 5 weeks to fully clear your system and baby's system. The dairy free diet is doable, but not fun. So I wouldn't jump to it unless you're sure there's really a problem.
Baby's start to become more "picky" about stuff like what pooping or what gas feels like at age 3 weeks. So a lot of moms think dairy allergy or colic when really it's just normal baby stuff. I'm not saying that's the case for you, but just keep that in mind.
What you really want to be concerned about is blood in the diaper (red or brown) or frothy green poop. Blood indicates there is a strong allergy/intolerance that you need to figure out quickly before you cause damage to baby's digestive tract. Frothy green poop indicates baby is getting too much foremilk and you need to get an oversupply taken care of. I highly recommend working with ab LC or even a GI doc if you find blood. And see an LC if you have frothy poop.
Otherwise just keep an eye on baby. Maybe keep a record of what you eat and pay attention to when baby is most fussy/ has the worst diapers. Maybe you'll discover it's just something like onions or broccoli that's bothering baby.
Good luck!!
I would give it another few days to a week. It really depends when your milk comes in. It took mine awhile. And with your LO getting green poop etc it might be that he is getting to much of the foremilk and not enough hindmilk.
