  • It's also possible you'll be fine for awhile and then your hormones will increase and suddenly your numbers will go way up.

  • It's technically not a false positive. Anytime you fail any 2 out of 4 draws on the screen you get the DX...even if your numbers are within a few points of passing. Many times diet can control it (at least initially) with few adjustments if you were already eating balanced meals and portions. The screen is a high glucose load so it shows if insulin resistance is happening to a certain extent. You just may not be eating the level of carbs that would trigger a high reading daily.

I was in that camp for most of my 2 pregnancies. I had maybe one barely out of range (125 after 2hrs) reading every week to start then had a few more as I got closer to my EDD. I normally eat multiple small meals daily so I barely needed to change my diet.

  • I find to be more mindful to eat more protein. Eat more during snack time. But find the 2 hr fast after a meal is harder for me. My body is used to small snacks all day. I get shaky especially in the am waiting to do bs after breakfast.

  • As others have said, you're probably not eating 100g of sugar regularly so the test tells you if you have insulin resistance and it's normal to not have highs when you test on your regular diet esp early on. I only failed my fasting number so technically don't have the diagnosis. When I don't eat a snack and check my glucose after a 11-12 hour fast my number is 95-96 when I eat a protein rich snack at bedtime and fast for only 9-10 hours my glucoses are mostly in the 80s... so a small tweak can make a big difference!

  • Thanks! I went out to dinner last night and had a high reading of 131 which included a piece of cake. I guess this is a big learning curve to figuring out how my body works

I've definitely gotten overconfident after a few good readings- hence going without a snack one night. Not really surprised that cake put you over. I've been able to do small amounts of sweets  with very low carb meals and been ok. It's a lot of trial and error.

  • Thanks guys! I'll be 31 weeks on Friday so it will be interesting to see. My whole week of testing has been fine. I actually just feel shaky sometimes.

  • I know how you feel. My only risk factors were age and my last baby being 10 lbs. Other than that - well, no family history and I was 105 before pregnancy and doing regular exercise. I was blaming it on stopping my exercise for modified bed rest and then bedrest, and also my steroid shots b/c I was so high right after those, but they did wait a week before giving me the 3 hour. I've gone up and down - before having the carb controlled diet I wasn't actually snacking at night, so I'd wake up with my fasting in the 60s. But generally when eating the amount of carbs and meal/snack frequency the hospital wants me to, I am btwn 75 and 85 fasting (I think I eat too many carbs for snack after my last reading b/c I'm desperate, then btwn 65 and 75 after breakfast (which seems crazy, right - I was convinced my GD was not for real). Then after lunch I'm btwn 80 and 100, but after dinner I'm often between 100 and 110. Sometimes I'll cheat and add a pastry or extra bowl of cereal/milk at snack between lunch and dinner and I'll somehow be below 100, whereas other times I'm perfectly good and I go over 120 (a few rare times). And I've been getting lower as I go along! So go figure. I think I just can't handle the huge amounts of that horrible drink! But actually, after my last reading when I do eat too many carbs, I end up with more frequent urination and a little dizziness, and I realize it doesn't hurt to be careful, especially for the baby. I can't wait to eat normally again though!
