Pregnant after IF

Urine retention

Does anyone have experience with this? I am 17 weeks and apparently the location of my uterus is restricting urine output. The dr had to put in a catheter. He said he has only seen it one other time and there is a chance it will keep happening until baby grows and moves up. I am hoping not. I don't want to be going in for catheters any more or have one left in. Anyone else had this happen? Good news is baby was super active on the ultrasound but I also worry having so many ultrasounds!

  • @liz4paws Thanks! I noticed some cramping for a day or two, then Friday felt some pressure and like I had to pee all the time but not much when I tried. I was thinking just baby growing but called to check and they had me come in. My family always has odd medical things. We keep it interesting!

  • How interesting...last night I had a weird thing where it was like my body forgot how to pee...had to go, sat down, nothing happened.  Then very little.  And I had to really make a huge effort even to get a little.  Took like 20 min even to get a bit.  Had a couple more episodes last night where it took effort (but less than the first time) and today I'm mostly back to normal.  I have no idea what any of it means, but it's good to know that urine retention is a thing, so if it happens again at least I'll have something specific to ask the doc about.  Good luck, AlmostWright - hope things work out so you don't need any more catheters!

This could be a UTI so you might want to talk to your doc sooner rather than later. But on a simpler note, have you tried leanig forward to pee? My stream is pretty weak these days unless I lean forward every time I go,

  • I didn't want to make anyone worry! It is apparently rare although real. When the doctor pressed on my bladder I could really feel the urgency and he could feel how full it was. It was painful. Apparently even Tylenol won't help the pain if it gets full enough so that is something to look for. The symptoms definitely could be a UTI or bladder infection too so I am taking antibiotics although my preliminary cultures were negative. I do have a fever this evening but we are visiting family and my dad woke up with a fever so who knows. Dr is just having me watch it and take Tylenol too.

@brooklynesque Good reminder! The dr told me to sit with legs apart, feet flat and elbows on my knees. Also to try, then stand and move for 30 seconds or so and do it again.

Things I never thought about or talked about before :). Good luck to all!

  • I had this happen once. I think I was about 16 weeks and I woke up during the night with a full bladder. But when I tried to pee, the urine was just dripping out. It took several minutes to empty my bladder and was very uncomfortable. I was very worried about it, but the next day everything was back to normal and it's never happened again. I asked the OB about it and she said it was probably that my uterus was situated strangely. I hope yours shifts soon!

  • I have moments like this. I have to change positions while on the toilet to completely empty and recently have had to start lifting my bump too as twin 1 seems to get in the way a bit. Never got a catheter because of it tho.
