Anyone else develop a lisp??

So I suddenly have developed something of a speech impedement.  I noticed it yesterday and again today.  I'm an Administrative Assistant so Im on the phone a lot and hearing myself talk is suddenly bizzare!

It's like I have too much saliva under my tongue. I know we produce more during pregnancy, but this is pretty sudden!  My face isn't swollen or anythign either.  Anyone with similar issues??

Re: Anyone else develop a lisp??

  • I don't have a lisp, but both times I've been pregnant I've noticed that my teeth have shifted a little bit.  I'm not sure what causes it... maybe my tongue is swollen?  Or maybe I'm doing something weird while I'm sleeping.

  • Well I plan on mentioning it at my appointment next week, but it's not something so severe that I actually worried about it being bad, it's just weird that's all!  And not something I have ever heard of happening.  Someone did just point out that I have had a lot of conference calls and have been running training sessions where I'm talking a lot and maybe tiring myself out.  Maybe it's just a lazy tongue, lol.

I definitely agree with @snow527 and give your doctors office a call.  Hopefully its just swelling but you want the doc to be able to rule out anything serious.

  • Has this ever happened to you before? When you were really tired and/or spent a lot of time talking?

If not, I would at least call the office and ask. They may say it's no big deal. But changing speech patterns/muscle movement seems like it could be a bigger issue.

  • I have a little but it's because so many foods irritate my tounge and gums.  It's gotten better but I had garlicky chicken at my baby shower and my tounge was swollen and messed up for a week or more, so I talked a little funny.  If you don't feel anything different in your mouth, like a swollen tounge, I would definitely mention it to your doctor.

  • My tongue is definitely not swollen (I have had that happen before from allergic reactions - its impossible to eat!) its just a lot of saliva! I just called the doctors office anyway but they are not there .

Wish I wasn't the only one experiencing this, but I really am not alarmed (and I'm a bit OCD, so thats sort of surprising!)

  • I've read that extra saliva is normal during pregnancy, so I wouldn't be concerned.

  • I definitely drool a lot now... kinda gross...
  • I swear I catch myself doing this sometimes but it's nothing bad. I am seeing a specialist soon though since I've been having problems with my jaw on the right side. I'm hoping it's nothing too bad and that it corrects itself after birth.
