Baby Names

oliver vs oscar

DH and i both love the name oliver.  my hang up is that our niece (who lives 10 minutes away and sees us frequently) is named olivia and i don't want to be weird, although part of me just doesn't care.  DH loves oscar, but i'm not sold yet.  mn for whatever we choose will either be curtis or charles (family names).  DS1 is simon, if that makes any difference.  thoughts?

Re: oliver vs oscar

  • I think they are both great names and very cute with Simon. I wish I could get MH on board with either of them!

  • I prefer Oscar in general, but I do like Simon and Oliver together better.

    Tough choice!

  • We had them both on our boy list. I think Oliver flows better with your MN choices, but I'd lean toward Oscar because it's a little more unusual and not too similar to your niece, though I'm not sure that's a dealbreaker.

  • I prefer Oliver to Oscar.

I don't think it's weird to have an Oliver and Olivia as cousins.

  • I much prefer Oliver to Oscar. For some reason Oscar sounds very harsh to me. I wouldn't worry about the cousin!

  • I prefer Oliver obviously. I had no idea it was "super popular" until I started lurking this board. I think it was number 80 something last year on the SSA list and I've only met one other in real life and he's in his 20's. I don't think Oliver is too similar to Olivia at all. The names look the same but they don't really sound the same except the "liv" part. Oscar is good, though, so I don't think you can go wrong!

  • I prefer Oliver. I don't think it's a big deal to have cousins Oliver and Olivia. I'm Kristen and had a cousin Christopher about a mile away when growing up and we both went by Chris/Kris. And my brother was Eric and our cousin was Erika. NBD. Never though anything of it.

I also like the flow of Oliver Curtis slightly better than Oliver Charles. All of them are great names though.

  • I prefer Oliver and don't think it's a big deal to have cousins Oliver and Olivia. It sounds great with Simon too! Objectively I like Oscar, but it still reminds me of the green monster who lives in a trash can.

  • I think either is fine but would pick Oscar if it was my decision!
  • I much prefer Oliver!  And popularity today isn't the same as it was 30 years ago.

  • I don't like oscar at all, it's just not a good name for a baby to me. Oliver is nice and sounds much better with Simon. I wouldn't worry too much about the cousin Olivia.

  • My personal preference is Oscar. I think it ages better than Oliver.

That said, I don't think your niece's similar name is a big enough deal to not use your favorite one.
