DS is 20 months and he has been showing a lot of interest in potty training for the last couple of months. He tells us after he goes 1 and 2, follows us in the bathroom and trys to figure out what is going on, etc. Well the last couple of weeks he will pull his stool into the bathroom, get on it and say "potty potty". So we go in there and take his diaper off and he stands there and "pretends" then we do the whole routine w/ flushing and washing hands.
We have been consistant and do this every time he says potty but just looking for some tips and pointers b/c I am starting to think he is just doing it to pretend to be like daddy. Should we stand there for a certain amount of time and if he doesn't go pack it up until he wants to do it again? I am thinking he is pretty young to actually be potty training but I don't want to not let him "pretend" if he is showing interest. Anyone else's DC start showing interest around this age?
Re: Potty Training Question
My son used to do that - he would even make a "pssssss" sound.
Just go with it. Keep offering him to go on the potty, and when he actually DOES go on the potty make huge deal about it. Hugs, kisses and applause. He'll get the idea
He's not that young. We started working with DD around 22 months. I really wanted to give up but DH made us stick with it. She does fairly well considering she's just over 2. We're still working on it though.
If you're really ready to work with him, try putting him on the toilet every hour. He's bound to go on it eventually and when he does make a huge deal about it. Get some stickers or something as a reward. DD did great with stickers and her own potty chair. We've been at it for about 4 months now and she now wants to sit on the toilet w/o the special ring but she will still use the potty chair if we're too busy with DS to help her or sometimes when she knows she has to go #2.
