Labial fusion/adhesion

Hello again ladies! LO went for her 2 month well baby check and shots today and during her exam the pedi discovered that she has labial adhesion. The pedi said that she only sees about 5 cases of it a year and my LO's is pretty severe. She prescribed Premarin ointment and directed me to apply it twice a day and then "pull" on the sides gently to help separate them.

Do any of you with girls have experience with this? I'm concerned because from what I understand this can be recurrent until puberty.

  • I've read about this recently. You're not alone! My DD has a hymenal skin tag. Not sure if it will disappear though it is slightly smaller than at birth. Anyhow, I told LO I'm so sorry vaginas are such high maintenance lol

Thank you for that link! It made me feel a lot better. Our pedi thinks it developed due to the hormones I passed on to her decreasing. I'm nervous about the cream because it could cause breast tissue development and my hormones were so high she already has tiny little boobs.

So sorry about your LO! Vaginas are way too high maintenance!

  • What? I've never heard of this!  Gah that sounds awful! I'm sorry :(

Now I feel the sudden urge to check my daughter's lady lips :/
Thank you! I wouldn't worry too much about checking them, it's apparently not too common, only 2-5% of girls get labial adhesions.

  • This happened to my coworker's daughter. I had never heard if it until she mentioned it. She used the cream and thankfully there were no side effects. I try to check LO at bath time to make sure it's all good down there. Hoping everything resolves!
  • My ODD had a labial adhesion. It was no big deal. The Premarin cream should open it up and then you can just use some aquaphor and gently spread it a couple of times a day, especially after baths. It is important to get it open because it can cause infections, but the Premarin cream works pretty quickly and then you just need to maintain it.

My DS had an skin adhesion from his circumcision. No one told me I had to pull back the remaining foreskin and put Vaseline around the head at every diaper change for the first year. The foreskin stuck to the head of his penis. I totally freaked out but I guess it's not that big of a deal. I just gently pulled back on the foreskin at each diaper change and after baths for a few days until it separated. It didn't hurt him but it was a little red so I put some neosporin on it. No trouble since.

OP I'm sorry your daughter has this. It's a good thing they caught it and I'm sure the cream will take care of it. GL!

@irishgrl317 - thanks for this! Did your DD have any side effects from the Premarin? Any recurrent adhesions?

  • No. No side effects. I was worried about that, too, but it only took a few applications to get it to open up. We didn't have any recurrences, by we were pretty diligent about using the aquaphor and gently spreading it to keep it open. Now she's 4 and I haven't worried about it in a very long time. If you have any other kids, I would be careful about where you store the cream and keep it out of their reach just in case. GL! I hope it resolves quickly!

  • My 2yo dd has a labial adhesion too, much better after a few months of Premarin.
