Cloth Diapering

snappi or pin?

I have been trifolding with our 13 mo. old.  But for the last couple of weeks we have been jellyrolling on our newborn.  So far I have only snappi'd.  But I just ordered snapless workhorses from GMD and they sent me a pair of pins.  Before I gave pinning a try...I was wondering what method of fastening diapers do you guys prefer?  And if you pin, do you stick them in soap first?  I will probably give the pins a try.  I am just curious what you prefer and/or if it's even worth trying.

Re: snappi or pin?

  • I tried pins with my flats and just couldn't get the hang of them.  As long as the material is thick enough in that area that the snappi won't scratch them, I think the snappi is much more convenient and quicker for me.

  • Some materials just don't hold a snappi very well, so that's when I use pins. I think I would prefer snappi but pins work better in some cases. It's not that hard after a little practice, I think the hardest part is getting DS to lie still enough while I get the diaper pinned.
  • I use an origami fold with my flats. I find a single pin easier than the snappi.

  • We used to use snappis more.  I always would switch between snappies and pins, but DH was scared of pins.

For the past few months we've been using pins only.  My DH finally got over his fear (he was afraid he'd poke DS).  The snappies weren't holding the pre-folds tightly enough.

We don't use soap, but have found that you do need to replace your pins every so often.  They just get dull over time.  I feel so retro using pins.  I love them.

  • Love my pins. And I agree the GMD ones don't need soap....at least mine haven't so far. I've been using them for a couple months.

Can't you just use one of those little needle sharpening bag things? I can't remember the name... I just tried to pin Js flat. It didn't work. And then I somehow forgot how to snappi. So yeah.

I don't know...I'll have to look into sharpening the pins.  I thought they just needed to be replaced after a while.  Am I the only one replacing them?

  • I just used pins for the first time tonight since the snappi got left at my moms. I feel like I needed too much pressure to push them through. My mom has used pins she had left over from cloth diapering us on DS and those go through super easy. I think it depends on the particular pins. I don't like my GMD ones, but maybe I just got a bum set.

  • I've been having trouble using snappis but now I think it is because my prefold's fabrics just don't hold it well. I will use a regular pin instead.
  • I recently bought a set of diaper pins for my mom to use, because she cloth diapered us with flats and prefolds but when I showed were the snappi she had no idea how to use it. She watches Colin for a couple of hours every Wednesday morning, so I bought her pins since that's what she knows.

She got the hang of the snappi and likes it now, but I am curious to try the pins myself.

I will be the odd ball here though and say for tiny newborns I loved our Boingos. They come as a set (like pins) and I found they made our newborn prefolds last a bit longer since eventually the snappy wouldn't stretch across. Also when using flats I just needed one Boingo across the front to hold it (like some with pins commented on doing), instead of a snappi.

Now that LO is a bit bigger, we're using snappis exclusively, but that's just because it's what I tend to reach for, the Boingos would still work too.

  • Whoa I put this post up ages ago!  Since then I have snappi'd, pinned, and Boingo'd.   :)
  • Is that what the berry is for?!?! I thought it was just decoration.

  • Can someone tell me the benefit to pinning a workhorse rather than just getting the ones with the snaps?
