Liv...again!

Hey it's me again- I asked for middle name suggestions earlier for "Liv." There were not many responses, which is totally ok, but I wondered if it was because y'all didnt really like the name at all? I had expressed concern that any middle name it goes with makes it sound like you are telling it to "live" (example as someone pointed out "Liv Juliet = "live, juliet!" Lol).

So, middle name suggestions aside, I'm now wondering what y'all think of the first name "Liv" in general: Is the middle name issue not a big deal, or is it reason to give up on Liv as a contender? Other thoughts on the name Liv please?

Re: Liv...again!

  • Good point that Liv generally a nickname! I personally don't have a problem with this bc my first name is (well, I don't want to post it here, but it's generally considered a nick name. It would be equivalent to "Jen" as opposed to "Jennifer"). And my son is Eli, not Elijah. I like that the given name is exactly what they would be called. My husband has a nickname that doesn't exactly "match" his first name, and it's always a big stink when he fills out paperwork bc he goes by his nickname so much that he forgets that on legal work he should have his "real" name. I don't like real name/nick name stuff. Their given name is what I will call them. So in my case, that aspect of Liv is not a problem for me.

  • I like the sound of Liv, but as a nickname better than a standalone name. If that doesn't bother you, then go for it... It's pretty.

I like suggesting middle names, so I'll try to find your other post!

Not many people usually respond to middle name posts. And as evidenced my the board in entirety— it is a slow day.

Thanks for the reply! I really have no problem that it didnt get many answers, but it occurred to me that my overall question was not "what should the middle name be," but "is middle name going to be too much of a problem with this name to be worth keeping it as a choice." So I thought I'd reword and ask again. So instead of middle name suggestions like on my first post, I was hoping this time to know what people thought of the name overall and if middle name is as big an issue as I'm making it out to be. No worries on the lack of answers! ;-)
  • I love, love, love Liv.
  • Thank you, brooksidebride!
  • I am horrid at middle name suggestions. However I do not like Liv as a full name. Olive and Olivia are both nice.

  • Sorry, it sounds like a nickname to me. I'm ok with some traditionally nicknames as standalone names -- like Theo for example -- but Liv just feels incomplete to me. Sorry.

Thanks for the response! Many people are saying this although it doesn't bother me. But it's good to know! Maybe I'll go with Livy instead. Still nickname-ish, but adds a little more to it than just the one syllable "Liv." Thanks for the help!

    I love Livie as well!
  • ^ to the previous two posters: I kind of thought that after I sent it too LOL! Livy does sound even more nick namey than Liv, and definitely younger. Maybe I'll stick with Liv. No one really seems to comment or be bothered by the middle name issue; and the short/nickname sounding first name is no issue to me (I have a one syllable short nickname as a first name and I love it. I never have to explain what it stands for and never have issues on paperwork). Thanks for the help everyone!
  • Like Liv, love Livia!
    Liv Charlotte
    Liv Harper
    Liv Sophia
    Liv Rachel
    Liv Sarah
    Liv Elizabeth
    Liv Allison

I think there are many more too, but IMO a longer middle name sounds best
    Good luck!
  • Livy is the usual English rendering of the name of a Roman historian, so when I first see it I think male.  The related name Livia, which Joy suggested, is one of my favorite names EVER.

FWIW Eli is a separate biblical character from Elijah, so I don't think of Eli as a NN, but as a name in its own right.  I don't think it's analogous to Liv.  I would personally want Liv to be a NN for Livia or Olivia, but yeah, that's up to you.

Yep I know this, and my son is named after Elijah, not Eli. I just knew we'd never call him the full "Elijah" so I figured we'd name him what we'll call him: Eli.

    Thanks for the response!
