Babies: 6 - 9 Months

When will you start trying for #2?

My LO is almost 9 months old, and besides starting to think about her first birthday party, I'm beginning to think when we should start trying for our next LO. We want them to be spaced out a bit, but at the same time, not too much. We weren't really trying when we got pregnant the first time (we weren't exactly trying to prevent it from happening either, though). What are your plans? Also, those of you who have had another already, when did you start trying for your second one?

Re: When will you start trying for #2?

  • I'm one and done, but if we did want another, it would be when DS is a lot more independent (like 3yo) since I'd have to have a CS

  • Mine are 3y2m apart. I like the gap bc the big one is independent - he can play out of my sight and I don't worry for his safety. He's verbal and can express his wants/needs. He understands things and can be reasoned with.

3 is a tough age w boundary testing and fit throwing but I'll trade that for the independence in a hot second.

That and I bf him for 20mo, so I wanted my body back for a while before I repeated the pg/nursing cycle.

  • We are actively working on #2 right now.  We had to do IVF to get DS and doctors told us our best chances would be try shortly after so that's what we are doing.  DS is a very easy baby so we figured we would give it a shot, I'm sure he won't always stay this easy but we will take it!
  • We aren't sure if we will TTC again or try to adopt again, but in any case I'm guessing we will wait at least a year, since we just adopted DS 2.5 weeks ago. We do want at least 2 kids, though.

We will probably start trying for #4 when A is 18 months. It just fits with everything going on in our lives. I wish circumstances would allow me to be pregnant already but it is better for us to wait a bit.

Edit My sons are 2.5 years apart and it has been great. When they were young it was a good spacing and as they are getting older it is still great. They are 18 and 15 and my baby is 8 months old. They are good with her too although ideally I would have had my kids all around 1-2 years apart.
  • My first 2 are 17 months apart. I love how they interact now and DD was way too young for any jealousy when DS was born. However I want a break for my body. So we are aiming for 2yrs apart this time. If I wean DS in May then I will have my body all to myself for the entire summer. Woohoo. I have been pregnant/BFing for 3yrs straight in March.

  • We are trying unofficially. TTC was tough the first time, and my first cycle after DS resulted in a MC. I would ideally be done with my masters, so we will go back to the fertility clinic in August.

  • I got pregnant with DD2 when DD1 was 9.5 months old. They are 18.5 mo apart. Love the spacing !

  • We plan to start trying in June when LO is 10-11 months. We'd like them to be NO MORE than 2 years apart, closer would be fine, just not quite ready yet! I agree about wanting my body back for a while. I feel like my body is back to as close to normal as I'll get now, so I should have 4-6 more months like this.
    #1 7/2013
    #2 3/2015
    #3 3/2017
    #4 10/2019
  • We were aiming for 18 months apart. We started trying right after my first period after DS was born. I honestly figured it would take a couple of months for my cycle to even regulate led alone get pregnant, so we started trying right away - thinking we were having more fun than actually trying.  I was wrong. DS will be 16 months Aug. 23rd, LO is due Aug. 26th.
I went 5 weeks early with DS, so I unfortunately have a chance that they could be 15 mo. or less. God willing, I'll carry LO to term :)
  • My DD is our first baby! She is 7 months old atm and I've convinced DH that we should start trying for baby #2 in about 2 months that way there is at least an 18 month age gap and I should still be pretty fertile from having DD so fingers crossed! I think our families will go crazy if we have another baby so soon but it's our lives and we aren't going to put it on hold for our relatives sakes.
  • My sons are 2 years and 3 weeks apart. I LOVE IT. the first few months were awful, but as DS2 becomes a little less high maintenance I am really enjoying watching them interact. I hope they are close friends all their lives. It's so clear even at 6 months DS2 is amazed by DS1. And DS1 is such a sweet older brother. But I'm not going to lie...my days are HECTIC!

     DS1 8/2011. DS2 8/2013.

  • I will probably stop taking my Depo shot sometime closer to Aug....I wanted to wait till she was at least 1 before trying for #2

  • We started trying around a year. I had 3 chemical pregnancies and things weren't happening like we had planned. I eventually had a successful healthy pregnancy and my kids are 29 months apart. It is really perfect. Http://northernbellemama.blogspot.com

  • DD1 and 2 are a little over 3 years apart. If we decide to have a third we'd like a similar age gap- so not awhile for us!

  • This sounds like what DH and I are thinking about. When did you start trying in order to have them spaced out like that? I don't want to expect things to take right away once we start trying, but at the same time, I don't want to expect it to take a while and have them really close together.

  • After our wedding, May 31st, we won't be actively trying, but we also won't be preventing. DD will be 10.5 months old at our wedding, so if we were to conceive immediately she would be 19.5 months old (approx.) when #2 would be born.

Since i'm EBF I have a feeling the process will be a bit delayed (no AF since she was a month old) but again, we'll roll with whatever happens.

A 2-3 year gap is our 'ideal'.

  • Trying now! DS is 6 months....and as soon as my periods come back (EBF) we'll see what happens!

  • We've been trying since my cycles came back at 3 months pp. I turned 35 in November and am not getting any younger, so the sooner the better for our last.
    Due with #5 April 22, 2015. It's a girl!!!!!

Yes it was planned, yes we know what causes that, no we are not on public assistance, and yes we will be getting cable after this. ;)

  • We'll probably try for another one in 3 or 4 years.
  • I keep thinking I want them to be two years apart, but that means TTC this summer. I still can't imagine being pregnant again.
  • We are fence sitting on being done, but if I had more I would probably want to try when LO was around 2.

  • Not any time soon.  Ours are a little over 3 years apart and it works well for us.  Plus, we aren't fans of the newborn stage.

  • DD turns 1 in August, MH and I agreed we could officially start trying in October. Though, we use no BC anyways, so it could really happen anytime.

  • We are going to start trying again around DS first b-day, to hopefully have them 2 years apart.

  • DD and DS are 2 1/4 apart which I really like.  DD was semi-independent by then, almost out of diapers, almost out of her crib, could understand 'gentle touches', could wait a short amount of time for things, etc.  For #3 I think we will start TTC in September so DS will probably be about 2 1/2 when #3.  We want DD to be in school by the time #3 comes or at least close.
  • We're done after two., but we started TTC#2 when DS1 was 18 months old.

  • I really want to start trying now. I have an almost 9 month old, & it would be challenging to be pregnant with how demanding he is. It is taking me like an hour just to post this small comment LOL. But i have always wanted 3 kids and for them to be close in age... I'm having a blast being a SAHM, but never wanted to give up my career long term. I think it'd be awesome to just knock 'em all out, spend some QT with them as babies... and then I can refocus on having my body back and moving forward with my professional life again. I probably have no clue what I'm be signing up for and I'm probably warranting a few eye rolls... but the husband and I have already stopped "preventing."

  • When DD was 2mo and started growing out of her newborn clothes, I decided I wanted another! My dr wanted us to space them out at least a year (due to a cs), so we waited another month and then began kinda-sorta trying. (I breastfed for 3 weeks, but had low supply, so AF came 6wks postpartum). I conceived when DD was 5mo, so they'll be almost 14 months apart! At 17wks, this pregnancy has been incredibly easy so far. I'm pretty sure it's because I've been able to rest so much (DD takes at least three naps a day, still). My only hope is that DD will be walking when LO arrives! :)
  • DH and I have been talking about this recently. Our DS is almost 9 months and I wanted all my kids close together. We are young, in our late 20's and I don't want to be pregnant too far into my 30's just based on family history, but we want 3 or 4 kids. However, DH quit his job after the new year to start his own company, which has put baby #2 on hold for a while. We want to focus on our son and getting out of "start up mode" on the business... especially with how much time a newborn takes up not to mention adding a toddler on top of that! I think the way it will turn out will be a 2.5 year age gap. I don't want to go more than 3 years though, but it's all in God's plan, not ours!
  • Our DD is 8-1/2 months and we just found out we are expecting again! They will be almost exactly 16 months apart. Sooner than we were expecting it would happen (not actively trying but not preventing) but I am 41 and we are thrilled that it happened again so quickly for us. I will have a repeat, planned CS. Holy cow!

  • We would like ours to be about 2 years apart so will start trying when DD is 15 months.
  • Never! Seriously. Think we are once and done. My labor/birth was pretty scary, as well as the NICU and not to mention colic. We are also not fans of the newborn stage. Don't think we want to go through it again.
  • We would like to try ASAP. DS is 7.5 months and we'd like them 18-24mo apart. That way we won't be doing things twice so both kids can have the same experiences. I'd also like to get the baby/sleep deprived phase over rather than finishing it and starting over. I know it'll be hard at first but I think it'll be worth it.

  • I originally thought we'd start trying again when LO is 1 but I'm in the process of getting my body back and might want to wait a little longer, maybe till LO is 1.5 or even 2 before we start trying again. I don't know, but definitely not until LO is 1 for daycare cost reasons.
