Q: brewers yeast vs. nutritional yeast

Hi ladies, I am usually on my BMB, but I have a question for you girls.

I'm making lactation cookies. Recipe calls for brewers yeast. I went to the store, and asked the lady about brewers yeast, she said they don't have it, but they had nutritional yeast, which is the same thing.

Everything I've read says it's not the same, and don't substitute with any other yeast.

So, is nutritional yeast the same as brewers yeast?

Also, there was an option to buy flakes, or the powder. I would but in powder form; right?

they're not the same, but they are similar- here's a link. they both have B vitamins and protein. honestly, though, i always used nutritional yeast in my lactation cookies because i happened to have it around. and apparently brewer's yeast is very bitter. my suggestion would be to use the nutritional yeast to make the cookies, and then have a beer with them. ;)

    Brewers yeast= bitter taste
Nutritional yeast = cheese like flavor

One is an active yeast one is deactivated but I'm not sure if that has an effect on the milk supply or not. They are both rich in B vitamins but the brewers yeast is known to be more effective when it comes to boosting supply. I purchase my brewers yeast at GNC for a large tub. I paid around $9 for it. I add it to everything we eat especially if I cook in the crock pot that night I just add in a tablespoon or two. It is noticeable in the cookies but it's not too bad. As for nutrional yeast I sprinkle it on popcorn but I don't know how it would taste in cookies or if it would have an effect for that matter. I do know nutritional yeast you have to eat in moderation as it can upset the balance in your body causing an over production in yeast resulting in infections (thrush, yeast infections, systemic yeast infections, etc) I'm assuming because it's active yeast? Well that's what my doctor told me when I asked her anyway. They are also derived from totally different sources so no they are not the same. Hope that helps!!

  • Well I made my cookies, they taste pretty good.
Will see if I produce more milk or not. If not, I'll go get actual brewers yeast.

Good to know about the yeast infections if too much is consumed.

    Thanks girls!

I read the packet of info my LC gave me on the two when my twins were born and it did say nutritional yeast *can* be passed in the BM not only causing the yeast infections in mom but also diaper yeast infections in baby and causing a likelihood of thrush to increase by 15 to 20%. And it is because nutritional yeast is active and brewers yeast is deactivated. The infections are less likely to present in an adult when eaten in small portions but can cause issues for baby and also upset natural gut flora even in small doses.
