Not girly girl names

What are some girl names that don't seem girly? H and I have our #1 which is Annabel. It just feels too girly sometimes. I don't want unisex name like Alexandra NN Alex. Anyone have any suggestions?

  • What makes a name girly to you? Lots of soft sounds and vowels? The meaning of the name? The association? My daughter's name is Eowyn. To me the sound is soft, very feminine and pretty but the association is strong and powerful (awesome butt kciking character from literature) so the name is not that "girly" to me. But you could easily get ten people with ten different opinions on whether her name is girly or not. Without a little clarification what you ask is almost impossible - at least for me.

My family is a Foreign Service family. Families like mine are posted in every corner of the globe. We live our lives away from family, friends and the conviences and comforts of home. We often live and work in dangerous places among those that misunderstand our intentions and purposes. Sometimes members of our ranks sacrifice our lives to further diplomacy.  Please remember that we serve too. And I'm always open to questions.

  • I'll give it a shot, but I think "girly" can be a bit subjective. These are names that I consider "not frilly" and in some cases, "spunky."

    Piper
    Wren
    Brynn
    Hadley
    Sage

  • Unless it's a unisex (or straight up boy) name, I don't see how any female names can be 'not girly'.  Since they are intended for girls, they are, by definition, girly.

Now if you are talking overly frilly/flowery sounding names, then that's a different story, but it's still highly subjective, so you'll need to provide a few examples to your idea of frilly.  These are my idea of feminine, but not 'frilly' names:

    Paige
    Brooke
    Harper
    Piper
    Claire
    Ava
    Eden
  • So-- a name that is obvioulsy a girl's name (not unisex), but not overly femme?  IMO-- that means less syllables, no "ana" "bella",

Sorry for any dups.  I do think this name style tends to have a lot of dated/ old fashioned names, becuase more modern names tend to be either aggresively female, or gender neutral.

I'm not sure I understand what you meant by "too girly."  To me, I'd say Liliana is waaaay too girly.  But Lily and Anna are fine.  But, you might think Lily is too girly.  I don't know.  I need more guidance :-)
As always you are spot on!

  • I don't like super girly names either. I think that's why I don't really care for most names that end in "a". My DD is Caroline. I also had Claire, Katherine and Elizabeth on my list.

  • I like Annabelle a lot, but, yah, I think I know what you mean about it being very girly sounding.

Gretchen, Bridget, Rachel, Gabrielle, Lauren, Meredith, Marissa, Grace, Lila, Cara, Jocelyn

And... Ohh... pp mentions Hillary. I'm not saying I love it, but I don't think I have personally EVER seen that mentioned on BNB before. Very nice!
