Moving to Lansing

Hi all!
My husband and I are looking to move from Mount Pleasant to Lansing in the next few months. We were hoping to find a place before the baby is due (early July), but I'm not sure that will happen or not. We're looking for a dog-friendly home, probably to rent.
Is there any place we should look (or avoid)?

If you don't have older kids and are renting, you don't have to worry about school district, which is the major motivating factor here.  There are some areas in Lansing that are not very safe, but you live close enough that you should be able to visit and discern if any area makes you uncomfortable.  Mostly Lansing is very patchy so it's not like one side of town is all bad or anything.  Most of my landlords here have been on the crazy side, but a lot of people report DTN is not very forgiving.  My H has lived in their apts many times and as long as you pay the rent on time, I think they're fine.  There are places everywhere, so all things equal, you'll want to be on the side of town nearest work.  The very best place if you want to live on the east side and don't mind living in Lansing are the Amber Townhomes.  Dogs allowed, very spacious, kind of unique, reasonably inexpensive.  Check out the Lansing Moms Meet-up Group if you want things to do.

If you want to buy, you will want to think about schools.  The big problem is that property taxes are much higher in the towns outside of Lansing, although Lansing has a 1% income tax that slightly makes up for it.  You will again want to look close to work.  If you have an idea what side of town you want, I can make more detailed suggestions if you are thinking of buying.
