Success after IF

Trying for #2 after IVF

Just wondering how many of you had success when trying for #2 after having to resort to IVF for #1.  Doctors tell us our best chances are to try as soon as possible but just curious how many of you had good luck with #2 compared to #1.

Re: Trying for #2 after IVF

  • We had DS from IVF #2. When we TTC again we started with a FET. We were cancelled twice but when we made it to transfer I got pregnant with twin DDs. I had two m/c on the way to having DS so even though it was hard, I would say the journey to TTC #2 (and #3) wasn't as long, difficult, or emotional as our journey to TTC #1. This is partly because we skipped the BS of trying on our own for a year, Clomid, and IUIs and went straight to what worked the first time. Wishing you the very best of luck hon!

  • Thank you!  If money wasn't an issue I would say screw the Clomid/Femara and all that and just go back to IVF since it worked the first time but it is a big chunk of change.  They thought they were going to have 3 frozen embryos waiting for us but a couple days after the transfer we got the news that they didn't freeze.  If I had those waiting around then we could probably just go right back to that.
  • Unfortunately #2 has still been tough for us. I only did 2 IUIs with clomid for #1 but #2 is proving to be more difficult. 4 clomid cycles, 4 menopur (I think) and 1 femara so far. Our diagnosis is MFI so pregnancy didn't fix any problems.

I wish we had the money for IVF but we don't right now. My DH doesn't want to do IVF because of the risk factor and expense. I am going to do to more femara cycles, just for fun then I guess we are saving for IVF. And thats only if i can get DH on board.
Best wishes with whatever you decide to do.

  • You can see the info in my siggy, but we were very fortunate to be successful with IVF on the first try each time.  Due to my age (38.5 the first time we did IVF), the RE's recommendation, and the fact that our insurance covered the majority of IF treatment costs (ran out of med coverage during #2, but wasn't OOP too much overall), we went straight to IVF each time, bypassing IUI.

I think one's diagnosis may certainly play a role in speed of success as well.  I had a blocked tube, and we did not appear to have any issues other than getting everything where it needed to go, so to speak, so that may be part of the reason we were successful each time.

In regard to trying again soon, we did just that, but more because of my age than anything else, since we wanted to get as many good eggs as possible while we still could.

  • Well, it took three full IVF cycles for number 1.  We haven't prevented since number 1 arrived.  Recently we did a couple of TI cycles and a clomid + IUI cycle with no success.  We will be starting IVF again as soon as AF appears.  Hopefully it won't take as many cycles this time around.  I'm pretty sure we wouldn't do three again.  We are OOP for all IF treatments.

  • It took 4 fresh and a frozen to bring home DD. We still have a G-d willing future DS on ice for us. We are currently getting ready to do some egg harvesting for a possible ET this fall or winter. Dd is 6 months old so I am not sure what success we could have had in that relatively short amount of time.
We are OOP for IF treatments except for iui but with a dx of severe MFI (azoo initially) - iui is a waste of time for us. I pray number 2 comes easy for all of us wanting a number 2, 3 or whatever.

  • Well, we didn't do IVF for number 1 (medicated IUI), but for some unknown reason number 2 was a lot easier despite my stats being even worse.  We were not even really trying with our second - just not preventing.  Although, it wasn't like we didn't realize what not preventing could lead to...I just wasn't quite ready to commit to the IVF route.  I was considering freezing embryos for later use, but I just kept hemming and hawing around about it.  Then I got knocked up from just unprotected sex.  I was on a bunch of supplements, though.

I think it depends on what your issue is.  If you issue is something like my issue (severe DOR), there is always a chance.  Even POFers (premature ovarian failure) rarely have spontaneous pregnancies. If your issue is something like no tubes, well, then that is a different story...

  • One of my best friends had her first DS after 2 years of trying, including 6 IUI's and 2 IVF's. Then she got pregnant with DS#2 the first time having unprotected sex after DS#1.

For us I got pregnant with my first medicated IUI with DD, but took 3 rounds of IUI plus IVF for this one. We both had unexpalined IF.... I think it's pretty much a crap shoot!

  • Our diagnosis is severe MFI (less than 1 million total sperm) so we had no illusions I would conceive #2 without intense intervention. I had one unsuccessful FET and am about to undergo my second one this weekend. If your issue is PCOS, endo, unexplained or some other condition it is entirely possible to conceive without intervention. GL to you.

  • We are unexplained and it took 3 IUIs and 1 IVF in order for us to have DS.  This time around we went straight to a FET.  I've had 2 failed FETs so far while TTC #2.  So although TTC #1 took longer (a year of trying, testing, IUIs and IVF), TTC #2 is proving to be just as difficult for us.
