Proteus Mirabilis?? UTI please help

Hello all. Has anyone ever had proteus mirabilis? From what my doctor said it causes uti's. I had a uti and did the macrobid pills. But then they called and said I had that bacterial infection. They prescribed something I was allergic to so then prescribed amoxcillin which from what I've read has some resistance to proteus mirabilis. I'm so worried. Can this be transferred to my baby?can my boyfriend have it?and just give it back to me? My obgyn is closed until Friday so I have to wait to contact them :(

  • I did ask him. He said it would be very unlikely that it would be sexuallly transmitted. So that he doesn't need to be treated. But then he's saying there's still a chance. I don't want to risk any chances :(

  • Proteus miribalis is a very common cause of UTIs (it is a bacteria) in both pregnant and non pregnant women.  It is usually easily treated with antibiotics, such as macrobid, which you were originally prescribed.  My guess would be that when they called and switched your antibiotic, it was because they received the results of the culture, including sensitivity profile which can take a couple days, of the infection and found that the antibiotic they switched you to would be more effective against the particular strain of bacteria that you have.  It is unlikely to be transferred to your baby if you complete the antibiotic regimen as prescribed.  The main way it would affect your baby would be if it were to be left untreated and became much worse, including infecting your bloodstream, which could then be transferred to baby.  As long as you complete your antibiotics, there should be no problem.
UTIs are not considered sexually transmitted, so I wouldn't worry about your boyfriend.  The bacteria are usually found in your gut (as part of normal gut bacteria), and only cause UTIs when they travel to your urinary tract, most commonly by wiping from back to front after using the restroom, but also possibly through wearing too tight or thong type underwear.
Bottom line is to finish your antibiotics and keep up with your Dr appts and this will be fine.
