Anyone else been told they have a "narrow cervix"?

So over the years I've had quite a few OBGYNs, and at least four of them have peeked over the sheet during my pap smear to exclaim "Wow, you sure do have a narrow cervix!".  Now, nobody really wants comments from the peanut gallery during that time, but none of them ever said anything additional about it, and I never thought to ask.  I did do some research on how a narrow cervix (stenosis? I think?) can impact fertility if it's narrow enough to prevent sperm from entering, but thankfully I did not have that problem.  Now my question is....will it effect labor and delivery? I have a midwife appointment on Friday, so I'm planning on asking, but I'm curious if any of you ladies have been told you also have a narrow cervix, and if it impacted labor or delivery (or if you were told that it might).  Thanks!

(Keep in mind, this is NOT the same thing as "narrow pelvis" or anything to do with my pelvic size/bone structure, just the cervix itself)

  • @eltrain5 I'm not sure if a narrow cervix could interfere with vaginal birth or not but let us know what you find out.

  • I'm probably talking out of my ass but I would think it wouldn't affect labor and delivery?

I mean, your cervix opens up completely to let baby through. That's what dilation is.

As I said, I really have no idea. Let us know what your midwife says though!

That's what I'm hoping.  Just curious if anyone's had any issues with dilating slower, having "cervical lip" issues during delivery, or anything like that.  I'm kind of expecting to get a "it shouldn't but you never know" kind of answer from my midwife.  We shall see :)

  • Lol this is one of those things where you think "was that supposed to be a compliment, ooorrrrr...??" I've never heard of it, but now I'm interested.

  • I have never heard of this either, but doubt it should be a problem.  Let us know what you find out at your appointment!

  • I'm curious to hear what they say as well, but I'm betting you'll get the "we shall see" answer.
Not entirely the same thing, but I have a very tilted cervix and they had significant trouble putting in my IUD years ago. When I had my HSG test prior to starting fertility treatments (hands down, totally awful) the OB-GYN doing it said she "wouldn't call my cervix completely stenotic but its pretty darn close". I specifically asked my OB if this might make my risk of preterm labor lower (since you know, my cervix has had to get manually dilated in the past) and/or if it would impact delivery. Her answer was to "not count on it" regarding the preterm labor risk and to not under-estimate what the internal pressure of a baby can do to your cervix.

Also, no idea why my font suddenly changed partway through. Sorry about that.
