Vent: Other parents, and their sick kids

Why would you bring your kid, who you think might have the flu, around other kids? Yesterday, some good friends of mine brought their DD to the climbing gym, even though she was running a fever, chills, and started puking shortly after arriving at the gym. I told the parents that it was really inconsiderate of them to expose other people, and kids,  because now everyone in that gym has been exposed to the flu. Not to mention, my two LO's, and another kid who is already immuno compromised.  They didn't want to lose out on a class that they had already paid for, so they brought their daughter in. I swear, sometimes I just want to punch other parents in the face when it comes to their sick kids. I can understand when the parents don't know, and their kid comes down with something while at school, or daycare, but to bring them around other kids when you think your kid has the flu?

Just got a call from the mom, her kid has a confirmed case of the flu!

  • That couldn't have been much fun for their kid! I don't get it either.

  • People suck. I would have been furious.
  • Wow. Team asshole. Even putting the issue of exposing everyone else to the flu aside, they knowingly dragged their poor kid out of the house with a fever, puking, and chills? Fuckwads.

  • People suck, hope your LO doesn't get sick.

I really feel for the kids that are sick and their parents drag them out into public. I know I'm cranky and hibernate when I'm sick, especially with the flu.

  • Wow. I hope they didn't get any other kids sick but really that poor child probably just wanted to be at home getting cuddles not doing a class. :(

  • that's so awful, really, I'm glad you said something!

I always struggle with deciding if LO is too sick for school, but for playdates and gym classes I would never bring LO if he were sick. And exposing other kids when you suspect the flu is just down right terrible decision making.

  • I paid for a quite expensive Mommy&Me swim class and missed the last two because DS had a runny nose... No fever, no chills, just a runny nose. And I was sad because he really enjoys the pool. I was actually called out over this by the Center, who said I had missed out on sooo much fun for being overly cautious...

Turns out he had a 3 week long cold. I guess they didn't care if others got sick?

  • wow, what a jackhole thing to do. Also... you gotta wonder how the little one feels- you feel horrible and your parents still drag you out?

  • Their LO felt awful.  Why the hell would she want to climb a wall in the throws of the flu?  That's just mean.

See this is questionable because my baby has had a runny nose for, no lie, 95% of his 8 month existence.  The OP's situation?  Fuck that noise.  I cancelled a play date for a Saturday when my kid threw up once at noon on Friday. Why?  Because I know how much it sucks to have sick kids and don't intentionally push mine on other people to infect the masses.

OP what did your friend say?

Their excuse was that their DD wanted to go and climb. She didn't look like she wanted to be there to me. She climbed for about 15 minutes out of a 60 minute class. She laid down the rest of the class. The instructor tried to keep her away from the other kids as much as possible, but kids, including my DD lost track of their routes, and ended up touching the same holders as she did.

  • With a cold, I'm a little "eh, whatever."
With the flu?  No f'ing way.  That's irresponsible for the kid and everyone else.

  • I can understand bringing a kid with a runny nose or even a cough.  But a fever?  Unreal and irresponsible.

  • I would've offered them a $20 if they agreed to leave.

  • If I stayed home every time my kids had a runny nose or slight cold, we wouldn't leave the house all winter.  But a fever? Fuck no. Complete asshats.
