What odd hobbies are you interested in?

After the dream thread i got to thinking... what odd hobbies are you interested in? Mine is dreams and interpreting them. I keep a journal and have my dictionary. I would like to get some tarot cards, but they seem a little scary to me! LOL.

  • I love doing jigsaw puzzles.  I find them very relaxing.  When I complete them, I take a picture.  DH gets mad because I build them on the dining room table and they tend to take up a lot of room.
I always want to do them and then realize that I suck and get pissy. I'm glad you love them though :)

I have a weird hobby of check marking each time someone is absent from my DD's class on a chart I have of their names. Yeah that's very weird.  My DD had a very high number of absences in grade K and 1 due to illnesses and I wanted to pay attention and see how many kids get close to what we had.. I think it would make me feel better.  Unfortunately, I see a trend among a few kids that have way too many and have surpassed her number with half a year still left. It's actually turned into some weird research project now... and the connection between their school work/grades and absences.   (FTR, we're only at 4 now this year, which is an insane improvement).   This is weird, right?

That's all I can think of.

    You win. =D>
    I'm not sure it's a good title :P
Really, it's not meant in a bad way.  I'm sort of a numbers/statistics junkie?  So it's like research to me.  It's not to say "Hey!! You suck! You have 22 absences after 3 months of school!" .. and more about the fact that research DOES say kids with a lot of absences (not due to sickness, btw- but because "it's too cold for school" or "we missed the bus!" or "I don't feel like sending them" at least 1-2 times a week) DOES result in suffered school work and learning.   It's research that's been done and proven, and I'm just proving it more on a personal level ;)

This is very different. How do you know when a kid is absent?

I love reading historical fiction.  It's my genre of choice.

  • @chapter79, how about other students' grades? How do you find that out?
From people oversharing on FB, and from sheets of papers we get home with the kids reading levels, spelling groups they're in.. things are color coded in her class. I don't pay attention to all the kids or anything, I'm not some weird stalker person.. I swear.  I pay attention to like 2 who seem to never be in school.  And from the reading group paper we just got, there was a connection of 20+ absences + being the only kid who actually went down in reading group, while everyone went up.  And spelling group.

Nothing but geeky statistic fun, it's always been an interest of mine.

Are you worried about your daughter telling her teacher or friends:  "My mom tracks my classmates absences on a chart at home".

  • Um no, because I'm not performing some illegal activity.  You ever been around many 7-8 year olds? They tell you a LOT about school. She offers this information.. "xxx wasn't here today, I missed them!".  I'm not doing it to be some strange stalker, like I said. It stems from my LOVE of numbers and statistics, I do it with a lot of things in my life.  But I'm not in the best of moods today, so consider myself done talking now ;)

  • It just occurred to me that I love reading aloud.  I was reminded of this recently when reading books to DS.  My husband isn't very good at reading aloud so he doesn't like doing it and we were talking about it one day and it occurred to me that I love it!  I used to always be the one to volunteer to read aloud in school if the opportunity presented itself.  I realize this isn't really a hobby but it is different.  I also love spelling.  It was my favorite subject in school and to this day I love spelling stuff and could probably do pretty well in a friendly competition (not one of those competitions you see on TV with the kids who can spell words I have never even hard of).

I love it too. DH said he likes to listen when i read books to DS b/c I am so animated and make up different voices. I also use to be a preschool teacher so I am use to it. Also I know I have to keep the kids entertained! LOL

Another silly thing I want is a puppet box to do small hand puppets. I think DS and I could have a lot of fun with one!
