Parenting after a Loss

developmental dysplasia of the hip

Does anyone have experience with this? Our family Dr sent us for an ultrasound on B's hips bc he heard a click on the right side and wanted to rule out any problems. Well they found that her hip joint is "immature". Dr. Google is not helping calm my worries that DD will need surgery or a body cast! We're waiting for an appointment now with a pediatric specialist. Has any one had this problem with their LO?

  • Not so far, but I hope the specialist can ease your worries with some less extreme ideas. How long will you have to wait for an appointment? Hang in there mama!

  • DD had a hip ultrasound as she was breech and at risk for hip dysplasia (esp an issue in breech babies and girls more than boys).  My understanding from that experience is that, depending on the level of dysplasia (a/k/a abnormal growth) that is seen, treatment can be on the spectrum of "wait and see" to give LO a bit of time to grow, use of a positioning pillow or a removable splint between the legs to position the bones correctly for a span of time as they grow, or in more severe cases surgery/casting.

We were lucky and DD's hips were fine, but while we were waiting I tried to remember that even if she needed casting or other treatment, this was an issue that was treatable and manageable.

Hope the specialist gets you infornation ASAP and that your DD can be treated with a minimum of inconvenience or discomfort.  Good luck!

  • I have an old bumpie friend whose DD had/is still having some hip issues. I know she was required to wear a splint/brace for a
stretch of time. Do you want me to put her in touch with you? Her DD is now a year old.

Thanks ladies. I'm hoping it's really mild and will require minimal intervention. They noticed the click at her 2 month check up and when it was there at her 4 month appt, they decided to send her for an ultrasound.

I'm canadian, so our health care is free, but the downside is we can wait awhile for appointments. It was about a month wait for the u/s. My GP sent in a referral to my OB/GYN in January and I have an appt at the end if march to get an IUD.

FX we can get it ASAP to the specialist.

  • A friend's baby was breech and at the 4 w appointment discovered it was the hips. She wore a brace for like 3 or 4 months. Her DD is almost 1 now, and she's been walking since 10 months and her hips seem absolutely fine .
Hope you get some answers soon!!

  • My DD did not have this issue but I did when I was born.  I know technology has changed but my parents had to keep me in a brace for about the first 4-5 months and then it resolved.  I've never had an issue with my hips as an older child and now adult either.  I hope you can get in to the specialist soon and any treatment is very short term.
