Doc hasn't put me on bedrest yet but I feel like I'm dying

so anytime I'm at work it's hard to breathe and it feels like 100 degrees in the building. When I get home from work it feels like my lower back isn't even a part of the rest of my body and I struggle walking and getting up from sitting down/lying down. I'm a supervisor for Panera Bread so I'm typically on my feet for 8 hours 5 days a week with the weekend off. I've talked to my doctor about my discomfort and they just tell me it's normal. This past week I also found out I have a yeast and a bacterial infection (again doctor didn't seem too concerned, told me not to work that day or the next but I could return to work the day after), almost done with the antibiotics but it makes me wonder if the infections are from being overworked and if I just keep working am I putting my daughter at risk.

  • I don't have experience with this but it does sound like you might need to slow down a little. I'm sure if you were putting your daughter at risk, your doctor would be more concerned (I hope..). Is it possible for you to take it easy a little more?
I'm 37 weeks today and for the past month, I feel like I'm dying if I make an extended trip to the grocery store so i can only imagine how you feel. If possible, try to slow down to a pace that you're comfortable with. Sure, aches and pains are normal during pregnancy but if you can avoid it, do!
    I hope you're feeling better soon :-)

  • Infections like that, kinda aren't a big deal, just because they're more common during pregnancy. The amount of time spent on our feet doesn't contribute to the bacteria in your vagina.

I worked retail for most of my first pregnancy and spent just as much time on my feet. Yes it was hard, but you have to find ways to accommodate your discomfort. I don't know exactly what your job entails, but finding a stool to sit on or spread out the time you take for breaks/lunches so that you can take a few min to sit and relax. If there is a manager above you that you work with, talk to them. Then, on days off, obviously do as little as possible and relax...Besides that, there isn't much advice I can give.
  • As to the BR statement...it's very unlikely that you will be put on bed rest without having specific complications such as pre-term labor or a shortened cervix. It's quite normal to have exhaustion, limited range of motion, and general discomfort as your pregnancy progresses.

Even high risk pregnancies don't always end up with BR. Both of my pregnancies were classified high-risk fairly early on. With DD I worked full time up till 39wks, just a few days before her birth, without any bed rest. My twins, on the other hand, landed me on bed rest around 25wks because they tried to make a premature appearance. I actually found BR much more stressful in certain ways than "normal" life.

Try to relax and not worry about things too much. The vast majority of pregnant women have their babies without being put on bed rest and, based on your descriptions and what your OB has said, your symptoms don't sound abnormal or like something that is threatening your health or your baby's health.

  • You probably should rest more and slow down, but like PP's said infections have nothing to do with being on your feet and probably won't go away with bed rest. Your dr probably doesn't want to put you on bed rest because laying around for 7 weeks will weaken your stamina for birth, and has no benefit at this point to you or your baby. They typically don't order bed rest unless there's a major complication. Pregnancy sucks for all of us and you have very common symptoms, but if you can swing it go ahead and cut back your hours. If anything, you deserve it!

  • Thanks ladies! I guess it was just people at work freaking me out. I walk in the door and they just stare at me like I'm out of my mind for even walking around, every other day someone asks me why I haven't started maternity leave yet (probably because I'm very petite and all baby- customers often assume I'm further along than I am). Feeling much less panicky now. When I mentioned the infections being work related I meant work strain and stress making it harder for my body to fight off infections.
