Who works a flexible schedule? What does it look like?

Hi All-
I had posted a few months back about the possibility of working 4/10's- my department was in the process of going through management changes. Now those changes have happened and we received an email mentioning the option of working flexible schedules, but NOT 4/10's.
Now that's off the table, I still want to propose a more flexible schedule to my supervisor that allows me more time with the kids. It still has to be 40hrs and 5 days a week, Just curious about those of you that work a flexible schedule- what does it look like? Anyone work a half day during the week? Just wanted a few examples. Thanks!

  • When I was still FT my flex schedule was 7 - 4.  This meant DH had kid duty in the morning and I got home by 4:30, leaving plenty of time for making dinner, hanging out with the kiddo, etc.

One of my friends worked 9 hour days Mon-Thu and a half day on Friday which worked for her.

  • I don't have such an arrangement, but I would love to work 7-3. Traffic is so light before 7 a.m. And I love getting to work early.

  • DH is also on a 9/80 schedule.  He takes a 30 min lunch and currently works 7:30-4:30 and gets a half day off every other Friday.  He used to work 7-4:30 and get every other Friday completely off but goes in later now to help get the kids read for daycare.

  • I used to work 7-4 Monday through Friday and loved it. My company changed their hours and now I work 6:45-4:30 Monday through Thursday and half a day on Fridays.

  • I have a totally different p/t wfh set up now, but when I was working f/t I did a 7:00-3:30 schedule and I liked it. I got home with time to spare for dinner. For awhile after that I did 32 hours per week with Friday's off and worked 8:30-5:30 and DH made dinner.
  • I have a flexible start time. I can start between 6 and 9:30 am and I can leave after 8.5 hours. I usually get to work around 7. It's really nice because I rarely have to use leave for doctors appointments.

  • Our standard office hours are 8:30-5, but no one really works those hours. I work 7:30-4:30. Hopefully next fall I will be working one morning a week from home so I can drive carpool for preschool.

  • I work Mon, Tues, Thurs, Fri from 7:00am-4:30pm and Wed from home for 4 hours. If I need to leave early or arrive later any of my normal 'office days' I just work from home in the evening to make it up.

  • My schedule is probably the most flexible...I make my hours whenever I want as long as I have 25 client hours a week. With that said its a lot of evening work because people work during the day which may be helpful with child care once the time comes
  • I assume that WFH is not part of this flexibility picture, so I would say the early start that others refer to is probably the best.
Alternatively, what about 1 day a week that is a lot longer so you can cut out earlier a few other days. Also if you can skip or cut lunch depending on how your time is tracked, that can help too. One of my staff regularly skips lunch or just takes 30 min so she can leave early another day or doesn't have to take time for a dr appt or whatever.
  • Not really flex I work in healthcare in administration so I have some 5am days and I'm sure I will flex when it happens

but I return to work full time in march and will work 730a to 330p
