Bottle weaning and food throwing

Any tips for bottle weaning? How many still on bottles? Also if anyone has advice on how to stop food throwing I'm all ears!

Re: Bottle weaning and food throwing

  • We still do bottles during the day and at night for milk.  Everything else goes in a sippy / straw cup.  It works for us

  • Can't help with bottles as DS never took one (I SAH and he EBF'd)

As for food throwing, do you know why your LO is throwing food?
Is it b/c he/she doesn't like the food?  Or he/she is done eating?  Or something else???

what worked was when we started giving him a plate instead of putting food directly on his tray.  It won't help you if you already are using plates, however.  Anyway, with a plate, he now only throws food on the floor if he gets mad (eg, me not letting him play with the straw in his straw cup).  If he doesn't like certain foods on his plate, he'll either put it on the tray, or hand it to me.

  • Wesley still gets one bottle of milk right before bed as part of his bedtime routine but he uses sippy cups during the day with no problem.  I'm hoping he will just wean himself eventually.  He did take a sippy cup a few nights ago before bed but I think that was a fluke as I tried it the next night and all hell broke loose.  I have no help with the food throwing as Wesley likes to do it for fun.  He has discovered that mandarin oranges bounce like little footballs. the dog loves it but I'm not amused!

  • If night time bottle is important try doing it outside of bedtime routine

  • Throwing food gets her removed from the high chair. Well 1 warning then I take her out.. I'll give her another opportunity a few minutes later if she's interested, but throwing food usually means she's done.

  • We went cold turkey at 13 months... pedi gave us the advice that the limit was 20 oz but there was no minimum, so I felt comfortable cutting her off bottles in one swoop. She took the sippy milk better warm than cold. Honestly we just got rid of warm milk a month ago. She loves water and has been drinking that out of sippy since she was old enough to have water.

We handle throwing food similar to @annabelle8101. We remind her food stays on the tray and if she does it again we take the meal away but keep her at the table while we finish eating. She is 50/50 for wanting it back. We have a pop off tray on the high chair so it's pretty easy to clear her food.
  • No help on bottles - she pretty well weaned herself.  She quit asking, I quit giving.  She never even noticed.  Food though, we had that same struggle.  If she threw food, I told her no ma'am once.  Then if she threw it again, I told her "all done!" and took the plate from her.  She has to sit in her chair until at least one parent is done though.  I'm not going to let her come beg food from us when she has the very same meal in front of her.  (usually it's the same meal.)  Really just within the last two weeks she has taken to handing me the plate and saying "done done!" when she's ready to get down.  We made a game of helping me clean off the spilled food on her high chair.  She refuses to let me take the tray if there's still food on the tray instead of on her plate. LOL
