Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss

Any suggestions for speeding things up?

On day three of waiting for the baby to pass naturally (measured in at 8wks, no heartbeat at my 10wk appt). The wait is more difficult than I thought but I told myself I would at least wait this next week before going with another option.

I have been googling things that may help speed things up and found raspberry leaf tea mentioned a few places. Does anyone have any other suggestions? Raspberry leaf tea is supposed to promote uterine health so I thought I might as well drink that even if I am skeptical.

Re: Any suggestions for speeding things up?

  • So sorry for your loss.  :(

I tried all the tricks in the book (raspberry leaf tea, blue & black cohosh, etc.), I honestly don't think it sped things up at all. I started bleeding several days after we got the news the heartbeat stopped (measured behind with low heart rate at 7.5 weeks, m/c confirmed at 9.5 weeks), and the actual m/c happened about 1.5-2 weeks later.

  • Maybe try some of the 'kick start labor' myths? Maybe it will work similar. My last MC was almost identical to the start of the birth of my son. I even felt my 'water break' it was strange and sad how similar it was. That day I did a ton of walking. Don't know all the secrets to kick starting labor but since the wait is killing you maybe you can Google and try some things? The only things I know off the top of my head are prim rose oil, pineapple and walking. Some women I know have also opted for acupuncture. Not sure if it will work but maybe it's worth a try.
  • Have you discussed cytotec with your doctor? There was no way I could remain in emotional limbo waiting for my body to do it on its own, but I didn't want to have a D&C so taking the meds to speed things up was the best solution for me.

  • @abbyful - yeah, I don't think anything will really work besides time unfortunately. But, it does make me feel like I'm moving towards a goal so I guess that's helpful in a way.
@maxsmommy123112 - that is a good idea. Solid logic. I am going to google that right now.
@ifmommaainthappy - the doctor told us about the medicinal option but I was anxious to go home and have time to think (we were at the appointment 4 hours and were feeling a little drained). I think if things don't progress by next Monday I may go the medicine route.  I have to look into d&c a little more though.
  • We were given the option of medicine, but were told that you may not pass everything, and may need to have the d&c in the end afterall. On the other hand, we were cautioned that it could take a while to naturally miscarry, and we wanted to be able to move forward more quickly. As scared as we are about doing the d&c, it's the right choice for us.

I hope everything goes smoothly for you, and doesn't take too much longer. I'm sure waiting is the worst part.
  • I was not given an option of a d&c. I used cytotec and it was quite painful for me and pretty traumatic because I had no idea what to expect.

    ALL WELCOME!

  • I chose to wait.  Found out at 11.5 weeks that the baby had no heartbeat and was measuring 12 weeks.  I chart and my dates were spot on and he determined that the baby had passed within 24 - 48 hours of my appointment. It took over 3 weeks for me to miscarry naturally.  (BTW - if you have to go to the ER they will want to know how far along your pregnancy should be, not the gestational age of the fetus. It was a sad realization when I had to say that I was 15 weeks pregnant.)  I drank 16 - 24 oz of red raspberry leaf tea every day. Everything that I have read pointed to it taking 3 - 3.5 weeks for a miscarriage to start after fetal demise. That was the time frame it took for me to miscarry naturally. It's hard to be in limbo.

  • 3-3.5 weeks?! Well that helps, I'm at day 15 now so knowing it might be another week really helps set expectations.  My mom asked me if they could have been wrong and I was firm with her at the time but the waiting has been messing with my head- like what if they were wrong? Even though I KNOW they were 100% sure... They said that definitively.
I have to go in tomorrow to do a blood test to determine my blood type.  I guess negative blood types may need an injection of some sort to prevent antibodies from forming against the fetal blood type?  Not certain of my facts but wasn't expecting to have to go back for a bit... :(

  • I went the d&c route and I was happy I did. It was quick, painless and it helped give me closure so I could begin grieving. I will be thinking about you, it's a hard road but time does help. Hang in there
