Babies: 3 - 6 Months

LO Rolled Off Couch This Morning

Ugh. I'm a wreck. I tucked LO (3months old) into her boppy on the couch this morning and ended up walking out of the room to get my water from the kitchen. I heard a thud and ran out to find her on jet back on the hardwood floor. She was screaming crying, I was shaking...I nursed her to soothe her which worked and she dozed off for a few minutes, and when she woke up she seemed normal. I can't find a bump or red mark or anything to tell me where she hit. She's never rolled before.

I called a friend who's a pediatric np (couldn't figure out how to get a hold of the on call physician for our pediatrician), and she said as long as she isn't vomiting or acting drastically different she's probably fine, that this happens all the time. Baby is sleeping now, and I'm still pacing and crying!

I'd welcome stories from anyone else who has had this happen :)

  • Oh, come on. All I meant was that I would honestly be surprised if "everyone" left their baby unattended on the couch at 3 months old.

ETA: If you meant that babies can sometimes roll off unexpectedly even when you're right there with them, of course that's true and that probably does happen to everyone.  But that's not what happened here and it's not what I meant.

I appreciate the feedback, and while everyone may not "leave their baby unattended on the couch at 3 months old" I can't agree that the fact that it may happen "unexpectedly even when you're right there with them" makes it any better somehow. I wasn't giving myself a pedicure, I was getting my glass of water. Of course even that won't be happening again, but every parent makes mistakes at some point. I obviously recognize mine.
  • It happens.  I don't care what anyone one says!  Even the "helicopter" parents have had this happen.  Like a pp said, keep an eye on her for the next 24 hrs.  Shes probably fine.  A friend of mine (who is overboard cautious with EVERYTHING) called me crying last year.  Her 6 month old somehow wiggled out of the buggy at the grocery store, and did a face plant into the asphalt parking lot!  She did take her to the hospital.  Just ended up with a nice goose egg on her head.  She had a mild heart attack!
  • LO's pediatrician mentioned not leaving him unattended on elevated surfaces at his 2 month appointment. She then went on to say that her daughter fell off the changing table, and that it happens to every parent at some point, so if it does happen don't freak out.

  • I was dancing with DS and hit the table with the back of my leg.  I managed to break most of the fall but he still bumped his head.  Freaked out called pedi.  They said not to worry and just watch.  I guess at that age, 14weeks, thy have to fall from about 5 feet to do any real damage because cranial bones are so thick.

  • It happens! don't be *too* hard on yourself! It'll happen to the best of parents. :) just keep a close eye on her right now but I'm sure she's fine! and just be more mindful next time that she can roll over! Just live and learn!
