  • DH is fluent in Hungarian. We both know a little Spanish and I know some Japanese. We want LO to learn Hungarian, but it's a very difficult language. I was trying to learn, but since I'm not fluent, it's hard to use in the house.

  • DH is quadrilingual (jerk) - English, ASL (his parents are interpreters), Spanish and Japanese (double majored in college).

I'm Mexican-American and I speak Spanglish and English. My mom tried to teach us Spanish but I always answered in English. So I understand and can read Spanish but was never forced to use it conversationally. I still have trouble with on the spot talking. I sing to LO in Spanish and English. He prefers the Spanish lullabies/folk songs.

DH speaks to LO in Spanish. He's white and his Spanish is so much better than mine. He teaches at a dual language school (English/Spanish) and he teaches Japanese as one of the third languages there. So he uses 3 of his 4 languages everyday. LO will go to his school when he starts.

  • I speak native Spanish (I'm Mexican). Fluent English which I learned in school. Fluent Italian, which I learned from DH (they say you can learn languages by sleeping with the dictionary, totally true  ;)) ). A bit of Dutch (because we have been living in The Netherlands since 2009 and we actually met and married here).

I speak Spanish to LO, DH speaks to him in Italian and friends speak to him in English and Dutch. He will be joining DC when he'll be 1 year old and there he will learn Dutch for sure. Most probably he will start speaking later than normal kids, but he'll speak 3 languages at least.

  • Spanish and English in our household. My mother in law speaks French every now and then to the baby and I know a little. She will eventually learn, hopefully not before me! Haha!

We are heading back to visit familiy in May - June. Koszeg. Not every day you come across another Hungarian ! Our LO will be taught Hungarian as well. You are right, its not a very easy language.
  • @sami0726 That's awesome! I am jealous you are going to be there that long. We'll probably plan a trip to Budapest in the next year or so. :)

  • Polish and English in our household. I was born in Poland and I try to speak only Polish to LO because I know he'll eventually pick up English from TV, daycare, and school. It only took me a few months to learn English when I moved here in 3rd grade so I'm not worried. Polish on the other hand is a little more complicated and since the grandparents don't speak English, I need LO to know Polish. We also hired a Polish nanny and we read Polish books. I am on a mission to find Polish Sesame Street and Polish Barney DVDs! :)
