Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

for those who used sleep sacks

My boys are 14 months and still in sleep sacks. It seems like they will be outgrowing them soon so I am wondering how to going about making the switch to a regular blanket. The sleep sack has become such a part of their nap and bedtime routine that I am nervous that switching to the blanket will effect their sleep. Of course I am also concerned about them not.staying covered since they move all over their cribs. Any tips on making this switch from those who have been there is greatly appreciated!

Re: for those who used sleep sacks

• How tall are they...there is an XL sleep sack made by Halo. DD#1 who is 37in fits in it still. She can keep a blanket on her now but because of her baby sister she likes to sleep it every so often.

• They are 30-31 inches. We have the xl, but it seems like it's getting too small. It's fleece so it may have shrunk some.

• I still use them at night and my son is almost 2. He's cool with wearing the sack and he ends up kicking blankets off during the night so I feel better knowing he stays covered. They make them up to like size 5T, I think. He just uses a big fuzzy blanket at nap time, though.

• Ok thanks, I didn't realize they made them that big!

• We stopped using the sleepsack around 10 months because she outgrew her current size and they are expensive - I didn't want to keep investing in them! We've been using a knit blanket since then, and have never had issues. She typically sleeps in a fleece footie sleeper with a short sleeve onesie underneath. I think I've found her sleeping under the blanket one time in the past 4 months when I've gone in to wake her up - but she's warm enough in the fleece so it doesn't matter. And we keep our thermostat at 68, if that matters.
• We just took DD at 21 months out of her Grobag. We went cold turkey and now use two small blankets for her in the crib. We also put socks on her (that she typically pulls off) or use footy pjs. As for the "sleep signal," we use a lovey (muslin receiving blanket) that she has used forever and have bedtime routines that we have stuck to so that helped as well. We also check to see if she is covered before we go to bed or when we get up for a bathroom break. So far so good.
• I actually make my own. It's really pretty easy and I can make them as big as they need to be. DD stopped wearing hers around the age of 2 and she dealt with being cold when she kicked off her blanket at night.

• I just recently started putting a blanket in DS's bed. I used a afghan my aunt knit. I feel comfortable letting him use that one since it has so many holes. It relieves my worries about him smothering himself.

• DS is 17 months and still in a sleep sack. Several months ago we started using only blankets for naps and sleep sacks for night. When spring comes we will switch to using only blankets and since it will be warmer, if the blanket doesn't stay on all night, he won't get too chilly.
• we still use sleep sacks. She sleeps better with them. They have Early walker ones where there are feet holes. We use those, though we keep her feet in the sack, not through the holes afterall.

• My son is 17 months and he still uses a sleep sack. I have no intention of stopping anytime soon and will just by the next size up if he outgrows the size he is currently in.

• Footy PJs! They are so much easier once your baby can walk. Or regular footless PJs when it's warm.
• DD still sleeps in a sleep sack at 20 months. She is average sized, and I actually still put her in her old 6-12 month Halo sleep sacks. She doesn't mind. I also got a big, thick 18-36 month sleep sack for the winter. So, there's no reason to give up the sleep sack if you're not ready!

• my daughter is 15 months, 33" and we have her in the large. We have started to put a blanket in the crib with her, but she twists out from under it and it's a crumpled mess in the corner in about 5 minutes.
• Thanks for all the posts everyone! I tried a nap today with an afghan and they must have taken it as a sign to party because they would never go to sleep, just jumping around in their cribs laughing and having fun! I currently only have one sleep sac for each child and they both were being washed. Needless to say, the nap didn't happen until those sleep sacks were out of the wash! I guess we might be using them for a while longer though.
As pp mentioned, they are expensive and twice as much when you have two! It's hard to find them used too.

• My DD is 13.5 months and I don't plan on stopping using the sleepsack for quite awhile! My son used them until he was 2 and he is very tall. I would just look for a bigger one. My son did use blankets, though, when it wasn't cold enough for a sleepsack...he used them from the time he was 4 months because he never moved in his sleep, ever...so he never moved the blanket. DD, however, is 13 months and has never had a blanket because of how much she moves around....so it just depends on the child. Since yours are movers, I would try to stick with sleep sacks for now. They also make ones that have holes for their feet.

• We stopped using the sleep sack around 11m when DD started standing up. She kept getting tangled and choking herself. Now DD just sleeps in a fleece footed pajamas. No blanket since she moves way too much. We're in Boston so it's cold but we keep the heat at 72 and she seems warm enough.

• I plan on using them for awhile. I like not worrying that she's uncovered. We use Aden and Anais and she will outgrow the large soon, so looks like we will switch to halo.

• Zulily frequently sells halo sleep sacks for $9.99 +shipping. You can go to their website and have them send you an alert when they going to be on sale. I am surprised they have outgrown xl. My 18 month old is 32 in and still fits fine in size L. I have also found some at second hand stores and sales.
• You can buy the halo sleep sacks for up to 4-5T. I did a search on amazon for "big kid sleep sack"

https://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_1?url=search-alias=aps&field-keywords=big kids sleep sack&sprefix=big+kids+slee, aps&rh=i:aps,k:big kids sleep sack

This is what I plan on doing when my DD outgrows hers in a month or so!!!
• DD is 16 months & still in a sleep sack at night, she uses a blanket at naps but it rarely stays on. I just have been buying the next size up as she out grows them. I am hoping to keep her in them until she is 2.

• 20 month old DS still uses a sleepsack. Halo XL. We're going to use them as long as he likes wearing them. He uses a blanket at naptimes though, and he's comfortable with that.
