Natural Birth

Retained Placenta

Have any of you experienced this?  I birthed my DD1 at home with no problems but ended up with a retained placenta and having to transfer to the hospital.
What are the chances of it happening again?  I will be doing another home birth but really want to avoid this problem again if possible.

Re: Retained Placenta

  • I had this with my first but had no issues with my three births following . I was tolled by my midwife that the chances are extreamly low though we did have the ultrasound tech tell us the location if each of our other three babies placentas just so we were reasured since there was a chance of scare tissue with me. thankfully all my other kids decided to implant in totally diffrent loactions.

  • no problem. i was nervous my second time around too. I didnt really feel relief till it was all over and the placenta was gone. I will warn you the after pains you get will be worse. After my first i was so drugged up i didnt feel the cramping that happens after you deliver that helps shrink the uturus so i was really surprised by it with my second( it gets more painful after each kid). Make sure you bring some tylonal , heating pad and ask your midwife if she has a tincture that could help.
  • I refused any drugs, so I've already experienced the massive cramping after. Blah. Not fun. I did get Tylenol a few hours after, honestly not sure it helped.

  • it doesnt really help . they gave me motrin which i dont even remember taking . i lost a ton of blood so i was out of it . The cramping gets worse , good news is if your cramping good you know everything is working great! the heating pad helped me the most the second ,third and fourth time around .
  • I'm a midwife. If you've had it once you are at higher risk to have it again. No sonogram can tell you if that's going to happen (it can show some rare things like accreta, but don't even go there). There is nothing you can do to prevent it. I don't know that I'd change my birth plans just make sure your midwives know & go from there. Just do some meditating & self hypnosis about your fears about it & see your placenta detaching easily after birth.
