Ideas for an active boy

My DS is climbing the walls and I don't know what to do for him.  He's 16 months and we are stuck in the house a lot because of the crappy weather and it being so cold.  I'm not looking for a lot of suggestions outside of the house (like Bounce U) because we do that when we can afford it.  What can I do with him inside that keeps him active and moving?  I've tried forts, blocks, bowling...it works for a few minutes and then he's bored and screaming.  Plus my DD always tries to hijack the games.  I need it to be Spring!!!

  • We just bought a preschool YMCA membership. It's $15 a month, we can cancel anytime.  Now we can use their pool and the kid's gym anytime which has a bouncy house, slides, climbing structures, etc.  Now I have a place to take DS when I don't know what else to do to entertain him.

At home we play with his ball pit balls in a box, play with his bowling set, we're using empty boxes to climb on and crawl through and pull him around in like a car, he has ride on toys in the basement, we use his water table a LOT and put snow in it (wearing mittens), water, sand, scrap paper, rice, we've been painting and coloring, using shaving cream, playdough, I just made lacing beads we will be using once they are dry, make forts, and we sometimes strip his crib mattress and prop 1 end on the couch and he plays on that like a slide.  GL!
  • Have you tried sensory activities? I know there are tons of blogs out there for them. They are great for our house. Also we took our pack and play and turned it into a ball pit.

  • Do you have a public library near you?  Ours is great and has toys and other things to play with in their kids section.  It's great and free.

  • We have a playroom and for Christmas he got a little trampoline with a handle that he loves to jump on and then I also found a Kangaroo climber on Craigslist for $30 so we cleaned it up and put it int he playroom so he can climb and slide.
  • The other day I put glow sticks in white balloons, then turned out all the lights and closed all the blinds. DS was so excited and we played for an hour. Then again after bath time. Best $5 I've ever spent!

Glow sticks in the bath are fun too. And you can put the glow rings in plastic Easter eggs.

We made a playroom area in the house, and have things that they can exercise their large motor skills like balls, basketball hoop, little bikes, slide etc.

This for us as well. DS has a bin with just balls in it (basketball, football, soccor ball- all foam of course) and he has a field day with those! He has another bin with blocks, and also a vacuum cleaner and a kitchen- so he keeps himself pretty busy.
