3rd Trimester

gestational diabetes

since i had a 9 lb boy my first pregnancy the obgyn tested me early for diabetes.  i failed the 1 hour at 143, passed the 3 hour.  then at my 28 week apt they said i needed to test again with the 3 hr.  i said can i just do the 1 hour and they let me.  i failed at 143 again.  they wanted me to do the 3 hour but i said no.  it makes me so sick for the rest of the day and i also have really small veins so the blood taking makes me look like im a crack head because they burst my veins everytime.  so i told them i would just follow the gd diet and test my glucose levels.

anyone have any tips for me on what device to buy and meal plans?  also i really dont think i have gd...im not overweight, eat pretty healthy, and am active.           o well.

This has nothing to do with getting GD, all people can get it regardless of lifestyle.  That being said, if you are going to be treated for GD, you should get a prescription for a glucose meter and strips from the doctor and meet with a nutritionist to learn about the diet.

  • I am not over weight, always ate
Healthy and very active and I still ended up with GD. Has nothing to do with it. Go to nutritionist, and get a script for meter and strips.
  • I agree with PP. I was diagnosed with GD even though I'm not overweight, eat healthy, and am active. This is my 4th baby and the only one I've had GD for. Any meter will probably work-- but for me the nutritionist was very important, a lot of information online is not correct.
  • You really need to meet with the nutritionist.

  • You don't need a prescription for your strips or meter. I use an Accucheck Aviva that I received through the hospital back in 2008. However, you can purchase one for about $20 on Amazon. I buy my strips on Amazon because they are a WAY better price than at the pharmacy with insurance. You should buy the meter in a kit with the lancet pen. Once you run through the lancets that come with the kit, you can just buy more at Target or Walmart without a prescription. You'll need to know what your doctor wants your morning fast number to be and what he wants your after meal number to be. Also, you'll need to know how long after meals to test.  For me, my fasting is to be not over 105 and my 2 hour after meal number is not to exceed 120.

I did find the meeting with the nutritionist at the hospital helpful, however, and I still refer to the booklet I received even with this pregnancy. I followed the diet and exercise program very carefully with my first pregnancy. I've since discovered that my blood sugar numbers are still great even if I allow myself to have a few extra carbs now and then during my snack times - to each their own...  You'll be just fine. Don't let others scare you. You're doing the right thing just trying to keep an eye on your numbers and watching your nutrition.
  • When my doctor wrote the script for my meter, she intentionally left the brand blank in case my insurance only covered certain ones. Then my pharmacist was able to chose which one I got the best deal on. I ended up getting it for free after insurance and rebates.
  • I had two 9.5 lbs babies and no diabetes issues so maybe nothing to worry about...

  • My nutritionist gave me the accu check nano kit. It came with everything. And when I was at Walgreens I checked to see if they had it, (wondering what it cost). And it was only 20 bucks. I also have to test first thing in the morning and two hours after every meal. I just had a follow up appoint ment and my numbers have been great. And the baby looks wonderful.
  • The meters are cheap. It's the strips that get you.

  • Yes thankfully I had a coupon!
  • Gestational diabetes has nothing to do with how much you weigh, how healthy you are, or your lifestyle, it has to do with how your pregnancy hormones affect the production of insulin from your pancreas. Also, GD does not necessarily mean that you will have a big baby. I would suggest getting a prescription for your glucose meter and strips if you have insurance that will cover it because it ends up being a lot cheaper, but you can also just buy a meter and strips without one. As PP said, you can even sometimes find coupons for them.

Also, if this is all new to you, try not to be overwhelmed by everything. It's hard at first, but it's better for you and baby in the long run. If you aren't sure how to manage your diet, contact your doctor and see if they can set you up with a nutritionist because it's very helpful. I was extremely upset when I first found out, but it'll pass and you'll get the hang of things. A GD diet is very healthy for you and baby & will make you feel so much better, too!

I have GD and have discovered that having stevia with breakfast and dinner (glass of lemon water with 2 packets of real stevia or organic protein shake sweetened with stevia) keeps my blood sugar levels normal no matter what I've eaten (I stick to a healthy meal plan). If I do not have the stevia my blood sugar levels spike. I don't know why, but read about stevia and diabetes, you can find on internet. My doctor says stevia use is fine. I'm not a doctor, nor am I suggesting you use stevia, I am just letting you know what has been a miracle for me, especially since I don't have to resort to using insulin.
